I have heard the sound all the time in some Trance forms, i'm told
the effect is actually a resonating chord chopped up to the on/off
groove send to a noise gate.
How can you do this in Logic? I tried this with the automation, but
its a bit fiddly and didnt sound right. Better would be for someway
to punch out the groove in a midi track and send it to a plugin.
Anybody know any otherway that noise gates can be manipulated to a
groove. I know that cubase has a special midi plugin for doing just
this.
Thanks

Pretty easy if you got the right gear, which in this case means
Logic 5. You just use the side chain input of the Noise gate
(inserted on the track you wanna chop)! Send the chopping track
to this sidechain, and you're rolling! :-) If you don't wanna hear
the chopper itself, just output it to some unused output!

Download Len's percolator patch from www.swiftkick.com. It doesn't
use a noise gate, but simply switches the volume to 0/127 when
triggered by a miditrack.

The effect you're referring to has been around since the 80's.
You can easily create the same effect with Logic's gate. It's the
same process as you would with a hardware gate. The usual method of
triggering a gate is by inserting a sound (usually a hi hat) into the
sidechain to trigger the opening and closing of the gate. In Logic
it's no different. Open a gate on a track that has a sustained pad
(or whatever other sound you like). Now go to the sidechain and
select the track that has the trigger source. A hi hat works best.
Once you get the sound you want make sure you turn off the source
track so that you only hear the gated effect. Either mute it in the
track mixer or don't select any outputs for it. Although the effect
has been around for a while it's still pretty cool and if used
creatively (not just 16th notes) it can fit into a lot of styles of
music. You can use a closed hat and every few beats throw in an open
hat to get some cool syncopation effects. Maybe even a few closed
triplets. You get the idea ... have fun.

as far as i'm aware the only available sidechain source is an
audio track, not an audio instrument or midi track.
am i correct, or have i missed a trick?

if your using a software instrument as your chopper track just do a bus send
(ideally 0.0+) and turn off the output off if you don't wanna hear it as
stated above
so all you really gota do is use another bus channel if your using a sw ins
as ur chopper!
