Subject: Question on level meters and AW8
Message #1457
A few days back I have discovered the following "problem" (LAW 4.0.3): I am recording analog into the AW8 through my mixer. The level meters in Logic show me (before and while recording) that there is no peak (all input just below 0 dB). But after recording, Logic tells me that the audio region is probably clipped (always with the same message "6 contingous samples" - why always 6 ??? ;-) Is anybody else experiencing this? Thanks! Best wishes Thomas

We are checking the signal for a minimum of 6 succeding maximum level samples... This should be a good compromise of telling if your recorded material is possibly clipped or not. The problematic is e.g. you never know if you recorded a normalized square wave or a distorted sine. There is no information in digital domain if a recording is clipped... There is no headroom... Maximum is maximum after A/D conversion... You could, of course say is you reach the maximum, this counts as clipped, but what, if you are recording a 100% normalized file via SPDif? Many people tend to reduce the normalize from 100% to 99.7 or something like this... There is also a roumor that some CD players have trouble when playing back 100% normalized files! For what its worth this always happens, and used to happen on earlier versions of LAW, to me.
