Since installing Logic 5 (approx. 10 days ago) I've loaded up
many songs that were originally created using Logic 4.7.3 on my
Apple Titanium Powerbook 400 with 384 RAM running Mac OS
9.2.1.
>
These songs were playing fine on 4.7.3. and now on version 5
they are stopping all the time because either the CPU and/or the
disk meters are maxing out and even on new songs created on
Logic 5 its easy to see the increased usage by looking at the
two meters.

I bought Norton and optimized the Hard Drive which helped disk
usage a little bit, but the problems are still there and as I am
using the Titanium as a self contained music making machine
this problem is very very frustrating.
>
To give some actual exmaples, on a song done in 4.7.3. there
were points in the song when 18 audio tracks sounded at once
and this did not even stress the disk meter, now in version 5, any
more than 12 audio tracks together flips put the disk meter.
With the CPU usage, again a song with 9 ESX's open in 4.7.3.
played with no problems, but in Logic 5 will again not play for
long without tripping out the CPU meter. All this is with running
Logic on a very stripped down Mac extentions set.

Anybody any ideas/comments/suggestions ?????

I can only agree with you on this. I use a B/WG3 350MHz with
MOTU 2408 and I have also noted how the buffer setting for the
card is affected. It seems I have to set a much higher setting
than before :-(
I either have to put up with latency for the softsynths or error
messages saying the CPU/ASIO maxed out.
Lets hope updates get this sorted out. I also call on emagic not
ignore users without G4 velocity engines and to keep things
working as efficiently as possible. Its a bit sad that an upgrade
results in less efficient use of CPU power!

i havent noticed any improvement with a g4 as opposed to a g3.
in fact both latency and cpu overs are pretty common here.
ive bought a real synth again, bugger this mindless soft synth
tedium....

did you make a reduce set of extension for Logic ?

Cyril, and others. I did some testing on my own, here's my
results: There are NO difference in performance whatsoever,
whether I use a very reduced, Logic only extensions setup, or if I
run a LOT of extensions. I've got Apple talk running, all the
network extensions, you name it. No difference at all. Haven't got
file sharing on, though, that one does affect performance, it must
me said. Also, I messed about with the buffer size settings of my
MOTU PCI324 system, and strange as it may seem, there
doesn't seem to be any difference in performance whether I'm at
256 samples or 2048! I can run at 128, and even 64 as well, but
some of the third party plugs (notably the ones on 'powered' PCI
cards) start to mess up at these low settings. Has anyone got a
clever explanation for all this? I thought (too) we were supposed
to keep the extensions to a minimum? I'm not complaining, it's
nice that it doesn't matter, I'm just a bit bewildered ...

In the recent past I used to _need_ a minimal extension set, just to
keep Logic stable. Running Logic with a full extension set tended to
crash my system in the next 30 minutes or so. Ever since 4.8.1 (and
now with 5.0) I too have noticed that the extension set you use seems
to be totally irrelevant. I can work for hours with a full extension
set, no problem. Also regarding CPU usage, there seems to be no
noticable difference between small or big extension sets. As you
say, having file sharing on isn't a very good idea, and I also always
switch off appletalk, but that's about it...
I guess that just means that Logic is rather well programmed :-). Be
grateful for small blessings :).
