Under V 5.0 is the ASIO set for the RME hammerfall likely to give me
better performance than the ASIO set for my 2408. I am looking to
achieve more plugin peformance during playback and to avoid the
dreaded disk too slow problems. My current system is P3 1gig. 512mb
SDRAM, Matrox 400, 2 x ATA 100 HD's, TC Powercore, 2408 and AMT8. My
line of thought is that even if I upgrade my system if the 2408
driver set is poor it is still going to be poor. It would be cheaper
to buy a hammerfall than upgrade the system.

It seems I get about 30% more performance than with the 2408

Seems the route to go then. Next question is will they reside happily
in the same machine?

no, you can't use 2 different ASIO drivers at the same time
How many stereo platinum reverbs can you use at one time at the moment. That
would give some idea of how your system performs. You can download the test
from this site: www.digitalnaturalsound.com/logic_dsp/index.shtml

Coincidently I was just looking at that table. It would seem that the
Hammerfall performs better on the PC platform than the 2408. I think
it will be my next step. I have been advised by my brother to hang
fire on PC upgrading as a new development is on the cards in the PC
world in around a couple of months. The performance of the P4 1.7 on
the ASUS P4T/RDRAM with the hammerfall is very impressive though.
Hi,
It is a well known fact that MOTU's hardware are optimised for MOTU
software (DP3.0). Therefore their ASIO driver isn't well written. I
use Mac and when I compare the performances of the built in Sound
Card (Mac A/V) with the PCI 324 ASIO Driver it is very obvious:
You can play much more plug-ins and tracks using the Mac AV Driver
than using PCI-324 ASIO.
RME cards are known to have ASIO drivers "built in". I was talking
to
a Nuendo specialist at Steinberg's headquarters in Germany, and this
guy told me that they chose to market RME cards under their own brand
names because RME cards where the most powerful cards on the market
when using ASIO drivers
