Why do you think it should do this?
See the user manual's appendix; here you find an overview which
button does what.

The Cancel button leaves alert dialogs if there is a Cancel or Abort
button in the alert.
It does not leave
* non-modal dialogs
* file select dialogs

in the manual it says pressing the cancel button when no alert is opened
will launch the toolbox at the current on screen position
of the mouse cursor.alternetly it will perform any function
currently assigned to the computer keyboard esc. key.

it leaves the dialog box there or does it close it?
by the way my f8 key does work so i hope its just user error on the cancel
and enter button.
if there is an enter button in the dialog box should the enter
key close it?
thanks mike v.

Oops. This is outdated, and we forgot to remove it. Cancel now does
the following:
* if there is a flashing selection, it is cancelled
* if the Arrange window is in a folder, it is left (going to parent folder)
* if there is an alert open, the Cancel button is clicked

It closes it, using the Cancel or Abort button.

Yes, but again only in modal alerts, not in file select dialogs or
nonmodal dialogs.

that explains it.
thanks so much for your quick response and the tip on the
apendix at the end of the manual.
i checked out what the buttons do from that list and all my buttons work
fine.
one question though,i have two rows of solo buttons instead of one row of
solo and one row of mute.
did the person putting them on my unit have to many martinis at
lunch or did you decide not to have the mute buttons?
