I have recently replaced my MOTU MTP-AV (Parallel port version, may not
relate to USB version) with a
Unitor 8 mkII as the Windows Midi driver does not pass some forms of Systems
Exclusive correctly.
My specific problems were with using the MTP-AV with both a Kurzweil K2000
&
K2500 as the MTP-AV
will not pass the required Systems Exclusive correctly from K2000 Logic
Environments or from the
Sounddiver K2000 Module.
So far the Unitor 8 mkII seems to handle the Systems Exclusive very well.
Another point to consider is how often the Windows Midi drivers are updated.
The latest MTP-AV (not USB) drivers were posted to MOTUs Web site way back
in 98, and despite myself
and others contacting their Tec Support no updates to resolve the Systems
Exclusive problems have been posted.
The Unitor 8 mkII has less in the line of front panel control (though I
don't miss them) and works in patch mode
when not connected to a computer.
The 32 patches are setup via the Control software from the computer. The
control software works on an
8x8 matrix allowing you to attach any or all of the inputs to any or all of
the ouputs and so I presume performs merging.
The control software is a devise specific subset of Sounddiver, so I have no
need to use it as it's part of Sounddiver.
When using the Unitor 8 with Logic & Sounddiver it switches to Computer
Mode
and is therefore in direct port
assignment from the environment much like the MTP. Control of Sync settings
for the Unitor 8 can also be set from
the sync page in Logic, which makes for a more integrated feel.
Hope this helps with your decision.

Subject: Unitor 8 mkII vs. MOTU MTP-AV
I am looking for some advice concerning a recent purchase of the MTP-AV, My
intentions were to use the MTPAV as a master wordclock source for the entire
studio but there are problems with the MTPAV and my Ramsa DA7 console so I
will not be able to use the wordclock, so setting that aside I am looking at
this as strictly a midi interface/patchbay/merger. I must say that the
(Win)software interface for the MTPAV is very easy to use by simply draging
connections from one device to another for patching and merging. Merging
capabilities are very important to me. My delima now is that since I won't
be using the wordclock off the MTPAV the Unitor looks pretty good to me with
regards to its AMT capability (I am using Logic) and Windows NT drivers (I
noticed they just release the beta NT drivers), I would love to be able to
use NT. My questions are as follows, 1. does the Unitor 8 have merging
capabilities like the MOTU?, 2. How does the software interface work? Will
the Unitor show up in the Logic Environment or is it controlled via software
console like MOTU or both? I still have the opportunity to take back the MTP
and exchange it for the Unitor.
