Do I need a sound card if I buy a digital mixer?I have almost given up
on the Yamaha dsp card with its crackling sounds. Is anyone using a
digital mixer going direct to an "Adat Edit "card therefore
bypassing
the need for a sound card.I am contemplating this set up with a Yamaha
o1v digital mixer and LAMP.Can I bypass the use of a sound card if the
digital mixer does the a/d conversions?Any feed back would be
appreciated.

Currently yes. In the not so distant future: maybe not. There is a buzz
about a Yamaha firewire card to connect a Yamaha mixer to a computer via
fire wire.

I use a Yamaha 01v connected to LAMP through the ADAT light pipe connection
of a Korg 1212 sound card. This set up works pretty well but is by no
means trouble free. AFIAK you will need some kind of card no matter what
unless you are willing to put up with the pathetic quality of the Mac I/Os.
How else would you be getting the audio into your computer if not through
some kind of card?
Also; the 01v is not bad and has its advantages but generally I prefer
doing effect processing within logic. The 01v has a very flexible routing
scheme which is a mixed blessing in that it is really hard to keep track of
the current routing status.
The mic preamps of the 01v simply are not good enough to use by themselves.
You will definitely need a mic pre.
Basically with these things in mind if your host CPU is fast enough to
handle to the effect processing you want to do (mine is) I am not sure
whether you will be better off with an 01v or some analog mixer like a
little mackie 24 channel 8 buss.

Hi Brian,

You need a digital audio interface. This has ADAT or TDIF interfaces which
send multiple channels digitally.

Unfortunately, crackling sounds most likely indicate bus hogging from your
video (or other) card. This would also interfere with a digital audio
interface.
There's been plenty of previous discussion on this topic. Search the Net or
list archives to find some tips.

Thomas
I too use the Yamaha 01V's (2) with the MOTU 2408 as well as 3 DMTi's
and 3 Kurzweil
K2500's I use all 24 inputs and agree 100% with the pre amp's being
poor.
BUT .... MACKIE Analog just doesn't have the headroom . I record the
K2500's at
16 bit (max allowed by DMTi and nice) and use 24 bit Light Pipe for
other live instruments.
Had the Mackie and I can tell you from experience, the 01V is much
better. It's better
than the 02r as well because of the increased headroom of 24 bits.

In a similar vein, I was looking at Roland's new 8-channel digital mixer
today. They advertise optional lightpipe i/o capability, and the board has
24-bit converters.
I currently use an Alesis Studio 24 board into an Event Gina soundcard. I
only use 5 of the Alesis' 12 channels, and the quality of the Gina
converters leaves something to be desired. So would it make sense to switch
to the Roland board with the lightpipe option and get a lightpipe i/o
soundcard? Or would that be opening up a whole new can of worms? (basically
i'm referring to sync problems). I'm not at all familiar with all the
digital details and such regarding lightpipe and spdif and all that, so
please bear with me.
Thanks,
Mike P.
I misspoke. The Roland board I was looking at was 12-channel. Oops.
