Subject: [LAW] EMI 2/6 : 2 ms are a legend (to stay polite)
Message #98278
Hi, This will be my last contribution on this subject, I give up. Have tried almost everything to have this thing work at 2 ms with my legal copies of Logic 4.81 and virtual instruments, like it is supposed to do. Apart from Macs that currently refuse to get under 6 ms, I tested the EMI on 3 totally different PCs with the latest driver, at all possible settings (frequency, reserved bandwith, latency, etc) : - PIV 1,7, 512 MB, MSI 845 pro (Intel chipset), ATI AIW Radeon, SB Audigy for MIDI input - PIII 800, 512 MB, ASUS CUSL2C (Intel chipset), Matrox Marvel G400, MOTU Fastlane for MIDI input - PIII 600, 512 MB, MSI 6199-VA (Via chipset with 4in1 latest drivers) , Midiman Midisport 1x1 for MIDI input, then MaxiSound Fortissimo (to see if there wasn't a conflict on the USB channel) The 3 machines behave globally the same way : plenty of clicks and incredible CPU consumption at low latencies. Only the PIV allows 2 ms with no (or few) clicks, but ALL systems regularly reach Logic's maximum CPU consumption level, with just a single virtual inst. played in realtime, no matter what kind of instrument it is : sample player or synthesizer. To avoid this, i have to set the EMI latency to 6 ms at least (ASIO or EASI), which is 3 times more than an SB Audigy ! If you already have enjoyed the Audigy's consistant 2 ms latency, you probably won't feel like going backwards at all... Conclusion : on a PC, except if used in standalone virtual synths, the EMI currently performs like an old Audiowerk in terms of *really* useable latency, and much, much worse in terms of CPU consumption. If someone proves me wrong, I'll eat my hat. Yann le Bihan

Hi, "2 ms are a legend" Maybe that is true, whatever it is the soundcard you are talking about. I fancy that EMI 2|6, maybe the latency acheived is not as low as that one a drummer would need it to be to monitor himself while recording, but it is low enough for me to play virtual instruments without a mess.
