The problem they were talking about with the IBM's.. is the IBM Deskstar
75GXP models. They had a recall of certain 75GXP models (I think a class
action suit was filed) and it was very bad publicity. However the IBM
Deskstar 60GXP are known great performers and I actually recently purchased
one a few weeks ago. It's totally silent compared to my older 6 gig and 18
gig Western Digital hard drives and does not suffer from any of the issues
the 75GXP models had. I got a 60 gig 60GXP drive for $109.... They also came
out with 120GXP models but since they are so new I wouldn't buy one just yet
(they are $300+ too)... A 60GXP IBM Deskstar is definitely the way to go
right now.
I compared the Deskstar and Maxtor information before I bought my Deskstar
recently. The specs were exactly the same. Same latency, etc. The Maxtor
said it was slightly quieter when idling.. but after talking to someone who
had both a Maxtor DiamondMax and an IBM Deskstar drive, he said the IBM
drive is actually much silenter in that when the hard drive reads and writes
the clicking noise is nearly inaudible. The Maxtor technically idles
slightly quieter but I can't even hear the IBM drive idling so I'm not
worried about it.. Yet he said the Maxtor drives are louder when data is
being written. Just search the message database for diamondmax deskstar and
you should find his post about that issue.
So anyway: stick with the IBM 60GXP Deskstars (very affordable, best
performance) and you will be just fine.

A little off topic.... but here's another experience:
I have two IBM Deskstar 75 GXP in my Mac: a 30 GB and a 75GB type.
Both they've been working flawlessly for about 10 months.
But... it's a somewhat uncomfortable feeling always to have the question
in mind:
"Will they fail today??.." ;-)

The question should not be that, the question should be 'did I
remember to back up all my irreplacable recordings last night'
As someone wise once said, digital data does not exist unless it is
stored in more than one place. Take this to heart, back up
judiciously and sleep soundly safe in the knowledge that whether your
drive brand X fails, or a wild elephant invades your studio and
treads on your main 'pooter, you can recover your music from it. Oh,
and learn a lesson from poor old BT - Keep backups of anything of
value offsite.

P.S. A thought - would people find it useful if I wrote a section on
backup technology & strategies for the FAQ?
I have 2 of the 120gb models in an EZ Quest Cobra case,
they are great, seem to as reliable as any other size.
