Subject: GEN: HD - maxtor or IBM?
Message #98111
Hello there. Some minutes ago I found a very interesting offer for Harddisks. My question for you ever-knowing guys would be: Are they good for doing my audio, and if, which one would you recommend? (mac g4 400 AGP). Here are the specs: 1.Maxtor DX740x-Serie, 3.5" IDE, intern, 7200rpm, UDMA133, 2MB-Cache, Maxtor Quiet-Drive-Technologie 2. IBM IC35L120AVVA07, 3.5", intern, 7200rpm, ATA100, 2MB cach I suppose they are good enough, but as my technical knowledge isn´t the best I thought I better ask here. ;) thanks in advance all the best putti

I would steer clear of the IBM's. I have some of the faulty deskstar series and it's a real pain in the ass. It leads me to believe that IBM is not good at quality control. rob robertnederhorst 2dcompositordude digithelldohmain http://throb.net > -----Original Message----- > From: putti67 [mailto:mikropu@...] <quotes trimmed by Admin> > Here are the specs: > > 1.Maxtor DX740x-Serie, 3.5" IDE, intern, 7200rpm, UDMA133, > 2MB-Cache, Maxtor > Quiet-Drive-Technologie > > 2. I have had just the opposite experience. I have yet to have a Maxtor drive not brek within the first year (I just lost 100Gigs of data on one last week) and I have yet to have a bad IBM drive. (not sure about the deskstar series) I myself use mostly Seagate. Everyone's milage may vary, but I will never ever use a Maxtor drive as long as I live. From my experience the IBM's have been very reliable, and better specs than both Maxtor and Western Digital. I have had approx. 6 different IBM's in use over the last 2 years, as well as 3 or 4 other IBM drives that are commonly used in several other manufacturer;s firewire enclosures (VST, LaCie, EZquest, etc.) very dependable, no failures. Maxtor's seem to be the most fragile from my experience.

I have three 45GB 75GXP 7200RPM HD's. I've never noticed anything wrong... What kind of problems are there suppose to be with these drives?
