I have found DX8 totally trouble-free on my system, which is Supermicro DGS,
2XPentiumII 400, 400-odd Mb RAM,
Layla20, UnitorII. I use LAWP 4.7, ES 1, SoundDiver 3 and Sound Forge 5. I,
also, have twin monitors using a Matrox DH 400 AGP board, a Miro DC 30+
board and Premiere. This all runs v. successfully under Win Me, with the
exception of "Release audio when stopped". It would be SOOO useful
if this were fixed in 5.0
Note the absence of pretentious tag-lines!!!!

Graeme,
I installed DirectX8 in order to run Acid 3.0 and also
have had no problems at all.
Running LAWP 4.7.1 - Gigabit MB, ATA66 bus, 256Mb RAM,
Winfast GForce2 dual-head VGA, MOTU 324/2408,MOTU
MTPAV, 3Com Ethernet.
LAWP 4.7.1, SoundDiver, ACID 3.0, KAOS Pro, Wavelab
3.0x, Storm, Rebirth.
Logic hangs once in a while - everything else is fine.

Well, if you look at the emagic site, they only mention 4.7.0. But if
you download and install the most recent 4.7.0 updater, then watch
the lower right corner of the splash image when Logic starts, you'll
see a small "4.7.1" there. Why emagic doesn't simply label it that
way on their site escapes me.
It only exists on the PC side.
