Yep, it is much more efficient distributing tasks between drives if they all
perform exactly the same.

How about RAID 5, using just one drive's worth of storage for redundancy?
You get 39 gig of storage, no data loss or work stoppage should a drive
fail, and write speeds ranging from factor 2 to 3 depending on how smart the
controller is with bulk data.
