Ok, I'm both upset and tired. I made one change, disconnected and
reconnected my USB Midiman8 to tweak it. I booted once without it then
reconnected and rebooted. I've have Win98 with 4.6.1 ...everything was fine
(except for my lack of comptency around Logic and midi in general) but, I'm
learning.
Why would logic all of a sudden complain it can't see the dongle? I pulled
it, reconnected it, rebooted a few times .... argh ...

(A) Run the 'find Logic key' program which you should have under your start
menu. If you don't run the programme directly from your Logic install
folder.
(B) If that doesn't work, try physically switching your Logic key over to
the other com port (i.e. from 1 to 2 or vice versa).
(C) If those still don't work, then enter 'win.ini' (get there by clicking
Start then Run then entering 'systedit'; when bunch of files open up close
them down until you get to the one headed 'win.ini). Go down to section
headed [Logic]'. Delete there the line that says 'key=xxxx' or similarl. Try
running 'Find Logic Key' programme again.
(D) If that STILL doesn't work you can try disabling one of your com ports.
Disabling Com Port 1 is usually the best bet. Right-click on 'My Computer';
choose 'Properties' from the pop-up menu; go to the 'Device Manager' tab;
click on the + sign by where it says 'ports (COM & LPT'); click on
'Communications Port (COM 1); click on 'properties'; put a check mark in the
box where it says 'disable in this hardware profile' or similar. Then
reboot. And try 'Find Logic Key' again.
If your PC complains bitterly, just go into safe mode and renable the port.
Then ... repeat the whole procedure and disable Com Port 2 instead. Then try
Find Logic Key again.
If all of that doesn't work ...............

Hi
I have had a similar problem and know how annoying it is.
I tried to get help from the distributor in Australia but apparently I was
the first person ever to have a problem with a dongle - yeah right!
Anyway, my problem was that whenever I made a slight adjustment to my
system, Logic would not be able to find the dongle. I tried a lot of
things and finally I came up with a solution which, in my mind, is really
weird but works 100% of the time (for me anyway). Whenever I get the
message that logic can't find the dongle, all I do is replace the cable
connecting the dongle to the computer with another cable that is
longer. Without fail logic will find the dongle. If something changes on
my system again and logic can't find the dongle again, all I do is put the
original short cable back between the dongle and the computer and Logic
will find the dongle straight away.
I told you it was weird but that is what I have to do to get logic up and
running again.
It may help.

Nice and simple!!
Could it be a build up and release of charge via changing cables?
Will try it next time.
Lot easier than what _I_ once went through.
Thanks.

Hi,
in my case it's EVEN simpler (but nevertheless annoying - it currently
happens
almost every other day). All I have to do is disconnect the dongle, slowly
count
to ten, reconnect it, and off we go.
Cheers,
Recky
