Thanks, Fernando, for the detailed answer to my earlier question about TDM.
Yet another question: Am I correct in guessing that there's nothing stopping
Logic from supporting two or more plug-in formats at the same time? That is,
you don't have to do something to fire up, say VST support and (heaven
forbid)
reboot or something like that to use Steinberg plug-ins, and then
reinitialize
everything to use TDM plug-ins, right? It's just shared, runtime libraries
(DLLs in the general sense of the term) either way, true?

Well, sort of. TDM is a different beast. I don't use it (I'd love to buy a
PT system one day though :-)) but I've done lots of research on it and other
high-end systems. If you want to use TDM plugins, you need to be using DAE
for the PT hardware. When the PT hardware is under DAE's control, Logic
cannot use VST plugins with the PT hardware. However, you can use other
hardware at the same time. So, ifyou need to run VST as TDM plugins at the
same time, you need another soundcard like an AW8 or Studi/o or WHY. So, as
you can guess, you cannot use VST and TDM on the same track (don't know
about the same audiofile) since you can have only piece of audio hardware
assigned to that track.
So, in answer to your question, if you have only TDM PT hardware, you do
have to re-init the drivers (ie DAE or Direct I/O). You may not have to
reboot Logic to do this though I think you probably do. If you have both PT
hardware and some other soundcard, then you can use whichever plugin format
you would like. Obviously, if you need/want to run a VST plugin *and* a TDM
plugin on the same track, you'll have to bounce first using one plugin.
BTW, since you mention .dlls, Logic Audio does cannot use PT hardware on the
PC. At the moment PT hardware only has drivers for NT and Logic does not
currently run under NT or Win2000. Even when it does, it is not a given
that Logic will be able to use the PT hardware under NT. I'm sure that it
will probably work in Direct I/O mode but not necessarily in DAE mode. If
you want to use Logic as your front-end with PT hardware, the only choice
right now is to buy a Mac. You could, of course, buy a second pc, run PT on
NT and sync the 2 apps up. IMHO, you'd be better off with the Mac though as
it is nice to have one file only for a session.
HTH,
Fernando
