objekt synth (virtual modular) as well as a few shareware
editors/sequencers.... I don't suppose that there would be that much work
in getting something like jazz++ or rosegarden going. Csound is there as
well.... Ok, so this doesn't compare to the swathe of PC/Mac apps, but come
on.. it's early days :)
I for one can see BeOS going from strength to strength - far from seeing
'stinger' as something that will allow your fridge to talk to other fridges
(Stinger is *much much much* too heavyweight for that - I work for a
company that produces *the* smallest, fastest RealTime OS in the world
(1)... *that's* what'll be in fridges :) - and the rest...), I see the
whole webpad/wireless IP(2) stuff really freeing the musician. Think:
instead of MIDI, we'll all be using IPV6 over (something like) Bluetooth,
just bring your new piece of gear into yourt studio and, hey presto, your
sequencer detects it, and seamlessly integrates it into your setup. That
sequencer might well be running under BeOS/Stinger/Epoc (WinCE is a horror
story, so don't mention it) on a webpad.... the studio sequencer could also
be used live (something I wouldn't want to do with a current PC/Mac), on
the train... anywhere. Take your sequencer to another studio... all of the
gear is recognised, and can be used... no more plugging MIDI cables (even
audio cables when bandwidth gets better). Data rates are higher than MIDI,
and the protocols more sophisticated than ethernet, so MIDI latency
problems will be non-existant (for one, there'll be no daisy-chaining of
MIDI leads, it'll all be broadcast) the limit on MIDI channels will be gone
(all instruments will be addressed using IPV6).
It will be good.
