Hypothesising - What if you'd said the same thing 5 years ago, that you were
totally happy with the Atari OS, which as it happens has stayed the same.
You'd be stuck with old, out of date hardware and software. Can you imagine
what hardware and software everyone else will be running in 5 years time,
far outstripping your old and slow media OS (if it was never updated again).
Also, BeOS is a very early, but promising OS from what I've seen. It has
only very recently been able to handle multiple audio channels. I'm
guessing that this won't be perfect or bug free.
What are the advantages of BeOS over Win98/ 2000 or Mac OS 9/ X. I'm
speculating
here. Slightly better midi timing, lower latency, less potential audio
glitches and faster scrolling (graphics). All these things have been
greatly improved over the last few years on Mac and Windows, and will
continue to do so. In 5 years there may not be much traditional midi around
anyway, having gone inside the computer via sample accurate VST2 or Yamaha's
mLAN Firewire. So in a year or two Logic on Mac/ Win dual processor 2GHz
machines will far outstrip a dual processor 600MHz BeOS machine with old
software
and hardware. Just look at where the Atari is now.
If there is no developer help Emagic may not be able to bypass certain bugs
unless Be fixes them first, like the multi channel audio thing.
I WOULD like to see Logic on BeOS, and I hope to see BeOS 6 and 7 (desktop)
sometime. But if this IS the last version, then you can understand that not
many large software companies are going to hold up development on Mac and
Win to write for Be.
I'm largely happy with Logic on Win98 and look forward to Logic on Win2000
(next month?).
Even if full development went ahead, I think it would be a few years to get
to the same level as Mac/ Win in regards to Sample editors, useful audio
utilities, plugins and drivers. I don't think there is a plugin standard on
Be yet. So this would mean Be or Emagic developing their own.
However, I think it depends on how Emagic would handle crossgrades to Logic
Be before I switched. I would not spend another £4/500 UK to switch to
Be,
as I would still need LAWP to use all my existing software/ plugins etc. If
I spent this money on better CPU or sound card I would get a lot more than
simply switching to Be.
Cheers
Mat
