Hi All,
I just watched the Digi promotional video on the new 001 system, and it
looks smokin'! I of course still have many questions and concerns. The
first thing is, I fear that the new RTAS format is extremely CPU hungry.
Just a gut feeling I have...
And secondly, I'm wondering if any of you know about this: You know how
Digidesign is always hyping how you can upgrade your lo end system to
higher end Pro Tools systems? Well, I'm wondering if the new 8 in 8 out
interface the 001 system comes with can be used on full blown Pro Tools
systems? ie: can it interface with D24 and Mix cards? If so, then the
001 system is a killer deal seeing as you would already have an audio
interface if you decide to upgrade. That is, if Digidesign would let you
keep it as part of the upgrade offer.
Also, does anyone have any idea yet of how this new system will
interface with LAMP? I believe it runs on DAE, which means we probably
won't be able to access the native plugins. I wonder if it will run in
Direct I/O mode also, and allow access to the discreet ins and outs on
the interface ????

Hmmm, CPU-hungry but stable? Is that a good trade-off (just
speculating)? My guess is that Digidesign is far more interested
in stability than getting zillions of plugins on an underpowered
computer.

The only trade-up I know is that they offer full credit back if you
buy a PT24 or PTMIX system.

Instability is caused by software / audio driver / audio HW interactions and
incompatabilities. High plug-in counts do not cause instabilities, but may
be more likely to reveal such weakness.
The only effect of high plug-in counts, or heavy CPU load, on a stable
system is that it will become less responsive - slower to respond to mouse,
draw the screen, and audio buffers may need to be larger for a higher
latency.
Cheers,
Thomas
