Again on this issue. Here is what I found on the 01v list: ---------------------------------------------------- From: Chris Edwards <chris@e...> | What kind of surprises? I knew I wouldn't get away with saying that! As I understand it: When you set the dither level to N, the 01V introduces dither into the N'th bit - ie. the N'th bit toggles on and off. This is what you'd expect. However, the remaining bits are not set to zero. They contain the same data as if dithering was off. So where dithering is on, these bits are essentially garbage, and the 01V expects the receiving device to perform the truncation. A real example - say you are doing a mixdown to 16 bit DAT via SPDIF. If dither is off, the 01V will output 24 bits to the DAT recorder. The DAT recorder will throw away the last 8 bits - truncating to 16 bits before recording to tape. However, in this situation, dither is almost certainly desirable, in which case the 01V dither page should be set to ON / 16. The 01V will introduce dither into the 16th bit, which is what's wanted. It will still put out a 24 bit signal, and the DAT recorder will truncate this to 16 bits. You end up with a correctly dithered DAT recording. There are excellent articles on dither [why its needed, when to use it etc] and other aspects of digital audio at: www.digido.com though the site appears to be down at this moment.
