Hey Gang,
I've been trying to update my system. I need to pick a new computer. Are the
dual quad processors overkill? I don't want to spend more than I have to.
Anything will be an improvement on my old G4. If I buy a dual 2.66, will I
outgrow it too quickly? Mac Store is no help. I will also have to get a new
Audio interface.
Any advice is very welcome. Thank you.

Base model now is a 2.88 model. I just got one. It is amazing. I can run a
ton of virtual
instruments and I haven't gotten the processor load to 1/2 yet.

I switched from a dual 867 G4 to a 2.66 in December and I'm loving it. I run
tens of VIs and hunderd plus plug-ins and my performance meters never go
above 25%. Regarding audio interfaces, I absolutely love the sound of Apogee
to the extent of not being able to work on other equipment anymore (I
previously did lots of location work on RME and some other gear). Get either
Duet or Ensemble depending on your I/O configuration.
Best,
Andy

I just upgraded to from a dual 867 G4 to the base 8-core and its
amazing how much more processing power I have. You should go with the
base 8-core model for $2800. It doesn't make sense to get the 4-core
just to save a few hundred dollars.

Is the sound quality of the Duet equal to the Ensemble, but limited
to 2 inputs, or is the Ensemble higher quality overall in addition to
having more inputs?

Dunno, never tested them side-by-side. All I can say is the Duet has
the same warm (I'd call it analog warm) and smooth sound as my
Ensemble. Speaking of the latter, it has a decent clock generator
(tested by syncing my samplers and other digital equipment to it) and
the warmth is achieved by boosting 80 - 100 Hz a dB or 2 and very very
slightly (around -0.5 dB) cutting the 3 k range.
Best,
Andy
