I think you can encode your stero mix down to 5.1 with software from sony it
cost a bit but it should work.
But you will have to change your card and monitoring though.
Who is going to be doing the re-recording? If they are doing the
final mix of the movie in surround, then it should be no problem for
them to add a surround space to fill the music out. If you've never
worked in surround before, and don't know how to calibrate your room
correctly, then it might be a little much to ask of you to sort all
of this out. But that really depends on your deadline and interest in
sorting out all the details.
One suggestion I have is to talk with the engineer ahead of time, so
he knows what to expect. I'm willing to bet that as long as the mixes
are good, he won't mind setting up a surround space for music as long
as he's given the heads up. Typically, the surround mix for music is
just a little more spacious, you don't need to do anything fancy with
panning instruments all over the place.
Were you just planning on giving them a stereo 2 channel mix? Or are
you going to be giving them stems? How are you going to print them?
If you do decide to mix in surround and you are in L7, forget it.
IMHO, the surround in L7 is a band-aid. It isn't even considered a
surround application in a pro sense. L8 however will work pretty
well to provide a 5.1 mix for you, and it would also allow you to set
up your Stem printing without having to use another app, or going out.
In either case, you should be able to do what you need without Pro
Tools. If you can't speak with the engineer, you should be able to
create a simple Rear Reverb or space, that you can use to flush out
the mix a bit. There's no right or wrong when it comes to mixing in
surround, so if they absolutely need a 5.0 ro 5.1 mix, then keep it
simple. Stick to the Stereo mix you have, and add a space to the
rears.... mission accomplished.
hope this helps.
