I want to try out Logic 8 on my current, but in case I run into any
problems, I want to be able to run Logic 7 still. Does Logic 8
overwrite any preferences etc used by Logic 7, or does it have its own
set of prefs, etc.
Thanks

Lots of folks on this list told me it wouldnt do anything but Im
sorry that is not the case..
My Logic 7 app was upgraded and merged with new content and became
Logic Pro 8. I had to go back to the Logic 7.2 DVD, use pacifist to
pull the app back out, and then use pacifist to merge the later
updates into it just to get my 7.2.3 back.. Im wondering if those
people that told me 'No it doesnt do anything to Logic 7' failed to
mention they renamed it or moved it out of the applications folder
first. I have both back now, Logic 7 is now just named Logic Pro 7.
Havent seem to hit any snags since all the settings got wiped, as I
do have to use 7 here at home for anything old Im also working on at
the studio because 8 wont run on the studio mac (dual 867)..
And yes it will over write all of your settings in /Library/
Application Support/Logic.
However you can install the leftover instrument and effects settings
from Logic 7 that get wiped (theres actually not that many only a few
instrument/sampler presets actually) and those simply get placed in a
folder in the tree. For example, the EXS 24 Logic 7 stuff will be in /
Library/App Support/Logic /Sampler Instruments/12 Legacy
Instruments.. Theres few others like the EFM1 has an 08 EFM1 Legacy
bank now.. Not sure how this will affect any old song using those
presets in their regular spot, as Im pretty sure Logic doesnt attach
the preset file specifically to the plugin and even if it gets wiped
out, your song should have the last instrument/effect settings used
in it anyways.
I pulled my entire Application Support/Logic folder out before I
upgraded just in case then spent the entire night renaming all the
folders for presets from like Compressor -> #Logic 7 and moved them
into my respective User settings folders.. Once I looked at the Logic
7 Legacy Content with Pacifist and saw what little was in it, I
realized all that work was for nothing as theres only a handful of
things from 7 that end up in those aforementioned Legacy folders..
95% of the presets are still there. Some of them however have newer
names, pretty similar to the 7 versions but if youre looking for a
particularly named preset, it might be slightly different now.. The
folders are organized a bit different too as theyre all numbered now
but it should be pretty painless as long as you remember to move your
Pro 7 or rename it before you install!!

I had none of the issues chris described, for me it was painless, my Logic 7
icon stayed
where it was in the apps folder, I had backed up so i just let it get on
with it. I didn't do
any preparation, as i wanted to see what it would do. All my channel strip
settings were
kept and automatically added to the new defaults. I've moved a lot between 7
and 8, all my
stuff is still in 7 (settings etc.) I dibn't have any of the jampacks
installed (before i installed
8) so i can't say what its done with that. Its been all good here...

Chris:
Hello, can you please share more detail on how you accomplished returning to
7.2.3?
Below is a message that I have posted to other forums.
Ultimately I want to go back to 7.2.3 with all of my instruments and
settings as they were.
I'm not sure if I should uninstall Logic 8/Studio, then reinstall Logic Pro
7.2.3 from the ground up per Apple procedure, or if I should merely use
Pacifist to replace the content. If Pacifist, which content exactly? If I
use the original DVD for 7.2, am I going to restore older material that
might have been replaced in a later update? For that matter, did patches
post 7.2 update any instrument of plug-in files that I may be concerned
about? I'm looking for the most dependable, efficient, and least risky
method.
Thanks so much...
==============================
For numerous reasons I'd like to uninstall Logic Pro 8 and return to Logic
Pro 7, the reasons for which I'd rather not discuss, as I'd like to focus on
the reinstallation task.
Apple states that Logic Pro 7 still functions, but this is not entirely
correct. Since many instruments were replaced, the complex 50-track songs
that I painstakingly mixed on pure LP7 (prior to the upgrade) now sound
completely different in LP7 post-LP8 install (as well as LP8 as you can
imagine). It seems that the levels are actually different on some of the EXS
and other instruments. Yes, Apple says they are richer and better, but I
really don't care. I am in the middle of a CD and need to return to the
state I was in prior to the upgrade.
Ultimately I'd like to reinstall Logic Pro 7 and/or its content in order to
get all of my original instruments back.
Does anyone have a procedure for this? Should I uninstall Logic Pro 8 and
then perform a complete reinstall of Logic Pro 7 following Apple's
procedure? Or should I simply use Pacifist to replace the content files
that were replaced? Will any of my preferences (plug-in settings) be lost
during a reinstall? Should the rest of Logic Studio be uninstalled as
well?
Thanks in advance.

Was this message for me?? You should really quote the initial email so
we know..
I didnt 'return' to 7.2.3, I used Pacifist to pull the application out
and put it back in my Applications folder.
Ive never used any of the Garageband or EXS instruments that come with
Logic so I didnt need the old settings folders put back.
You just use Pacifist, you can search the installer package and grab
just the Logic 7.2 app. Then you open the updates with Pacifist, tell it
to merge it with the previous app. Voila 7.2.3 back.
But to repair your system the way you want it youre going to have to
remove Logic 8 and just reinstall 7. Maybe pulling the 4GB of sampler
instruments/plug in settings with Pacifist will work if you name them
right and put them back in the right location.
