Hi All,

I hope it's pilot error on my part - but it seems like an important
thing is missing from the new L8 Save With Assets functionality.
In L7 I used to love doing this: I'd save as a project, and then as
I'm working along and building the tune and arrangement up, I'd
intermittently do a "save as" and add an incremental version
number
to the newly created song file. So I would end up having one
integrated project folder with several different versions of the song
file contained in it, saved at different stages of the songs progress
along the way; all referencing this one project folder and it's
contents - audio files, etc. It worked great.
Now in L8, it seems like the new structure won't let me do a "save
as" and have it remain contained within the current project folder.
It wants to create a new project each time when the Save As command
is invoked. Even if you turn off the Include Assets checkbox; it
seems to lose it's reference to the main project folder it is
residing in. A related consequence of this is the record path
functionality. It won't maintain it's connection to the main project
folder's Audio Files folder.
Can anyone shed any light or insight on this?
And a related query: It seems there's no more Set Record Path
dialogue that allows for setting the record time or length. So every
time I hit record (for audio) now, Logic seems to default to
allocating the entire remaining space on the record drive each time.
Is there really no where to set this? It goes against all the
conventional wisdom we have been taught all these years about disk
fragmentation and allocating record times in advance.

From reading the manual and some hands on with L8, it appears you can
just Save As and uncheck the copy audio files, etc. for similar
functionality to what you mention.
A big part of 8 is changing our nomenclature: no more use of the word
"Project".
It appears to enforce creating a new Song folder for each unique "Save
As" of Save. I would just save the alternate version to a subfolder of
the parent Song, unchecking all the Asset boxes. It will reference the
data files within the original Song.

Right. That is something you have to do every time.

I guess that is the intention but instead of making things easier
they just made things harder and more confusing.
I smell the slimy tentacle of Apple all over this particular
"enhancement". To something that the Emagic crew had gotten into
a
perfect condition in previous versions and I must say this is one of
very few aspects of L8 that just irritates the hell out of me.

Before I got L8 I was afraid of this "save as" wierdness, but I
don't think I'm getting the problem that Eli has. I still haven't completely
figured out the record path functionality system, but once I get a song in
it's project going, I can "save as" to my hearts content and all
new audio will be in the same project folder just as in L7. Many versions of
the same song in one folder with all of the audio in one place.
That said, I understand and agree with Dennis's gripes about the changes in
the "save as" dialog. The BIG difference is, as Dennis mentioned,
but should be emphasised again, is the lack of a "move files"
option in the save as dialog box. The big difference comes when you want to
split one project into multiple songs, and have your audio files
appropriately organized. The lack of a "move" option can
definitely be a pain.

It's where it should have been from the beginning, even back
before the concept of "project" and we just had "song
settings".
But the record path will always default to the Audio Files
folder of the Project folder.

Hi f-erenc,
I've looked there. I don't see any option for setting the recording time /
length. Only the
location.

As I just read, there is no such thing as recording time anymore.
(And that that was so simple it didn't need attention.. I guess it
does) ;o)

Ooops, I didn't read your initial post clearly.
This feature is gone (it caused way way way way way
more problems than solved them). Phew, that's 50
less tech support calls a year now for me!
The workaround is to place a meta event where you want
to recording to STOP.
So in a MIDI region, create Meta Event #52 via the
Event List. This region could be on any track, even an
audio track.
Hell, stick one of these in somebody else's Arrange when
they aren't looking. Hilarity will ensue!

I wasn¹t aware there was any need to do this. I looked through the
manual
and couldn¹t find any reference to it except that the max recording
times in
AIFF and Wave are considerably less than the CAF format. I¹ve been
simply
recording and stopping when I¹m done. So far no nasty side effects. I
also
love the fact that it seems to be drawing the wave form display as it
records so it doesn¹t have to take up time afterwards.
Is there any problem recording without a predetermined limit?

Some people like to record unattended. So it'll stop
automatically.

That is the most devious [and hilarious] thing I've ever heard.
cheers to all,
