Hello,
I have been experiencing very strange behaviour with entering lyrics in the
Score Editor.
In particular, hitting tab (which according to the manual will advance and
create a lyric object under the next midi note) works maybe 1/6th of the
time. The other times I honestly can not figure out what it does. Seems
to have a mind of its own.
I have come across some postings that said this was a bug with the 7.0
release of Logic but had been fixed with the updates. I have all the
updates installed but still get funky behaviour. Has this bug not been
fixed or is there something I am not doing correctly? Is there a work
around or some sort of settings that will stabilize the behaviour?
I am a new user with Logic and went the Logic route in particular because of
the great job Microsoft, er I mean Apple, did marketing the score editing
features. I can not begin to explain the last two weeks of frustration and
late nights trying to get lyrics into songs. Tell that Apple is not as bad
as Microsoft in promising the world but not being able to deliver. If my
last bastion of hope for mankind is just as rotten as what comes out of
Redmond I will have to swear off technology for the rest of my life.
Thanx
Jim

I've done a few projects with it this year in 7.2.3 and it seems to work as
advertised for
me. Make sure you've selected the pencil tool to add the first lyric, not
the text tool. If
you're using a grand staff or other multiple staff system, make sure the
lyrics are snapping
to the correct notes. Don't worry about them ligning up where you want them
right away:
you can easily line up lyrics (and chord symbols) with the key command
"Align object
positions vertically"
I'm on a dual G5 (maybe you're Intel chip?), OS 10.4.10, Logic Pro 7.2.3.
Doug
Ah... the pencil tool. I bet you every 6 times I had the pencil tool
selected and it worked.
I think I also skipped the first update and went directly to the second
update. I will try the pencil tool first and if I am still having problems
I guess i will have to re-install, update sequentially and see if that eases
my pain.
Thank you very much for your response.
Jim
Well, the pencil tool did not do the trick.
I un-installed/re-installed Logic with sequential updates and that too did
not do the trick.
So I created a new song file and rebuilt the song and bingo... well sort of.
The lyric objects
started to behave as they should kind of. Still a bit funky as it takes a
bit of waving the mouse
pointer (with the Lyric object choosen) over the midi notes before the note
events start showing
up as they should in the tool tip bubble.
Three weeks of late nights with little sleep and less progress. I am sure I
will love this product
once I learn its quirks and work-arounds and become fully initiated in its
subtle ways, but by that
time I expect Apple to have released a revolutionary audio editing product
that brings their flagship
audio editing suite back up to Apple's usability standards.
Having come back to Apple after a 7 year hiatus with an unfortunate
assumption that
"Logic Pro" - being an Apple Pro App. - would by de-facto have the
enjoyable usability
associated with most of Apple products I am more then a little frustrated
and unfortunately
more then out of the necessary cash to update to the next version of
Logic when it is finally released.
Thanx for all the help.

You're welcome for a bit of advice. Sorry it's not working quite right. Are
you on an Intel
chip computer? That may explain its odd behavior.
It's a great program - I use the Score Editor for a lot of projects and
overall it works pretty
well. Let's hope the next release will have improved upon existing features
without adding
a major bug set......
Doug
Yes, I am on an Mac/Intel.
My only conclusion after countless hours trying to get the lyrics to enter
correctly in the score editor is that lyrics with v7.2.3 are buggy. So much
so that if I had Steve's number I would phone him and ask for a refund.
Problem: Hitting tab button highlights lyric object currently editing
instead of advancing to next midi note.
Solution: Fight and live with it.
Very disappointed.

Well, Logic 8 is out - maybe it's fixed..... I bought mine today - haven't
had any time other
than to install it (that's 2-3 hours right there).
Doug
Well, to add to my sad story...
I bought the academic version. Paid for it July 7th, received it around
August 8th, internet connection was down till August 22th so could not
download patches (out of the box Logic Pro was pretty much broken on intel
macs so for the first two weeks I was fighting trying to get non-functional
software to work - lost three recording sessions highly inspired I might add
by my shiny new Mac), since then recorded one song to learn the score
editing features as that is why I went 'Logic Pro" in the first place,
been fighting with the one song since trying to get to the point where I can
"stream" in lyrics as fast as they pop in and out of my head.
So when you add it all up, I have spent $500.00 on now obsolete buggy
software for a month of sleepless frustrating nights wasting my time trying
to figure out work arounds to an apparently version 7 release software. If
I did not develop software for a living I would be going postal. As it is I
can feel the developers angst knowing that users out in the real world are
going to find some disappointing features..er I mean bugs. Nature of the
beast.
Thanx for keeping up the dialog and keeping me company in my misery. I am
working with my supplier for a refund so I can get Logic Studio. If my
supplier can not help I am hoping to be able to contact someone from Apple
as it is such a sad sad story - especially since I've maxed my credit out on
this venture. Based on my experience I do not want to be stuck with a
version of Logic I can not upgrade because it appears there is still loads
of room for improvement. If I only knew then what I know now.
Jim
Phoned Apple HQ last night.
Funky behaviour reproduced, no work arounds provided, no encouragement that
a patch will be released now that Logic 8 has been released.
Puts me a month behind sleep and $500.00 in the hole. What a wonderful
ride.
When i get home i will (BEFORE updating) try this out.
i have been writing lead sheets with logic for a little while without too
much trouble...but i also am on a crusade to get the score editor fixed..so
i guess i have had too much trouble.
i honestly don't remember this particular problem being insurmountable...and
i am on a macbook pro.
It does work as it is supposed to some of the times but I have yet to find
any rhyme or reason to it. Assume that there is a way
to trick into working correctly as in the end it is just logic (no pun
intended).
