It might be easier to do it from SoundDiver (comments anyone?) - but to do it from Logic, go to the Environment window and create a New Instrument (call it XV-2020). Under Options, go Define Custom Bank Messages. you'll need to find the list of banks in the XV manual and the required bank select messages - it takes two bytes (well, 7-bit words to be precise) to define a bank, and they are given as Bank MSB and Bank LSB. For example, I have a JV-1010 and the custom bank messages window looks like this: Bank 0(a) Control 0 80 Bank MSB Bank 0(b) Control 32 0 Bank LSB Bank 1(a) Control 0 81 Bank MSB Bank 1(b) Control 32 0 Bank LSB Bank 2(a) Control 0 81 Bank MSB Bank 2(b) Control 32 1 Bank LSB Bank 3(a) Control 0 81 Bank MSB Bank 3(b) Control 32 2 Bank LSB . . . . and so on. MSB is 'most significant byte', and LSB is 'least significant byte'. Whenever "Bank 0" is selected, both the (a) and (b) commands are sent out (in that order). Other synths may require more or less commands sent to define a bank. They go in sequence a, b, c, . . . Once you have the banks defined, you can then go through the business of typing in patch names. . . . . but before any of this, check Roland sites from around the world (not just Japan or US) and you might just find an environment already set up. Once you have done all the hard work, make sure to save the song as an Autoload so that every time you start a new song it will have all the settings for the XV. Good luck! alj
