Hello Logic Users,
I have a question regarding the EXS24, or maybe it's a question regarding
the Apple Loops Utility. I wanted to know if I can load apple loops into
the EXS24 so that when I adjust the tempo of my song in the arrange window
the samples in the EXS24 adjust with the tempo I set. In other words is
there someway to load up tempo sensitive samples into the EXS? I know how
to set the tempo markers and make the sample fit correctly individually in
the song but I would like to be able to have it adjust in the EXS 24 so I
can punch my midi keys and have the sample cruise with it. Sort of like how
the MPC works with tempo adjustment.
Thanks for any help and I hope this summer brings new creativity to all of
us.

You didn't say it, but I guess your question also is also about time
stretching? The EXS24 can not do instant time stretching to match
sample length to tempo and pitch changes. If you create an EXS24
instrument patch with Apple Loops these loops will work as ordinary
samples inside the sampler. Meaning they loose their time stretching
and pitch adjusting function as EXS24 samples.

Hi,
I don't believe exs24 can do this for you directly, but there are some
pretty cool ways of
doing this, dependent on the type of apple loop you're using. Both of them
use the 'touch
tracks' object in the environment (back to my old friend again.)
1-If your desired apple loop is a 'midi' style (green icon in the loop
browser) then its
relatively straight forward. Go into the environment and create a new layer,
in this new
layer create an audio object and set it to an unused Audio Instrument
channel. Next create
a touch tracks object and wire the output of the TT object to the Audio
Instrument (make
sure the icon box is ticked on both). Crete corresponding tracks for the two
objects in the
arrange page. Now drag your green apple loop directly from the loop browser
to the audio
instrument track (if you drop a green loop onto an audio track first it will
behave like an
audio (blue) apple loop.) This should load up the relevant audio instrument
track. Now
open the TT object (in the environment) and drag the midi region (created
when importing
the loop) to the key you want to trigger it on the TT window. In this window
you can set
parameters like triggering mode and loop behavior (for details look in the
Logic reference
manual). Now mute the corresponding apple loop in the arrange page (using
the mute
tool). Now if you hit the key (you set the apple loop to in the TT window)
with the TT track
selected in the arrange page, it should play your apple loop, in time. You
can set TTs to
quantize the starting point (nearest 1/8th for example.) You can load
multiple midi
regions into the TT and if you set up your midi channels right (ie the
regions channel and
the audio instruments channel match) you can wire multiple Instruments to be
controlled
from one TT.
2-If its an audio only loop (blue) you'll need to chop it up somehow and
then create a
corresponding midi pattern that coincides with the start of each slice. This
can be done
manually using the scissors and then loading the slices into exs24, but
there are a few
apps that may help. You could try something like Phatmatik pro (now sold by
isotope),
which loads up the loop, chops it up and then exports the midi
(corresponding to the slice
positions) and then will play each slice via midi, so you can drag the midi
file selected into
TTs as above. There are some others that do this sort of thing, but i know
that phatmatik
works like this, you can now trigger the loops as above.
The flexibility of logic's environment is where it really shines, as once
you have set up the
TT object you can use all kinds of midi effects to modulate and mess with
your loop.
Both of these may seem a little convoluted and if you've got the money and
you do this a
lot, then you might want to look at ableton live which kicks arse at this
sort of thing, and
you can re-wire it back into logic, so you can add effects and mix it as you
would in logic.
NB Logics sequencer must be running for TTs to work.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Wow! This is one of the most useful tips I've seen here in a long time : )
Thanks for dropping science on us all : )

Thanks for the help Per. Much appreciated!
Hey Mike. Wow that is some great stuff. I've been learning how to use the
environment and I don't know why I haven't learned more about it earlier.
Thanks for the great info, I'm going to go step by step through your
instructions and get back to you.
I hope all is well, and thanks again.
