Subject: [LUG] Node effectiveness with Mini and iMac
Message #228142
I was hoping to get a good chunk of change to set up a second workstation, but the chunk has shrunk, so I'm thinking of setting up a station with a Mini or iMac, with Logic Pro, Waves Gold, Kontakt, and a few other odds and ends on the Mini or iMac, and have the students plug in their Mac book pro or iBooks in as a Node to get some reasonable performance. Am I dreaming with this solution? I don't have the $2500. for a dual tower now, trying to still get enough installed for them to work with. Has anyone used a Mini or iMac set up with a node, and can give me some idea on how well this works? My main studio is a dual 2 gig with 1.5 gb RAM, Waves Gold, Logic Pro, Kontakt, Garritan Personal Orchestra, etc. Can I expect a Mini or iMac with a Mac book Pro or iBook node to give me similar performance? Or - 2 Minis running on a Node? We have some other Mini's around I might be able to steal 2. or 3. or 4. David Wilson Brandeis Theater Company Brandeis University Waltham, MA

Well the first issue is that the NI plug-ins won't be able to work within logic as a node. Only Logic's plug-ins will work, and not the EXS (due to samples and copywrite issues). > > Has anyone used a Mini or iMac set up with a node, and can give me > some idea on how well this works? Good question... I have a G5 dual 1.8 and a Mac Book Pro, with a 2.16 core 2 duo, and the MBP has about 25 to 30% more power. While the Mini might not have the same grunt, it will be close, maybe 80%. > > Or - 2 Minis running on a Node? We have some other Mini's around I > might be able to > steal 2. or 3. or 4. Well, the node issue is that they can only be used on Logic's plug- ins. So if you limit your arrangements to Logic plug-ins, you can add more nodes, and get more power. I would assume though that the more nodes you try and use, the more issues that might come up... ethernet can only sent so much audio data at once, so I imagine this will be the biggest issue while using nodes. > > David Wilson > Brandeis Theater Company > Brandeis University > Waltham, MA Take care, George Leger III ________________________________________________________ http://www.myspace.com/georgelegeriii http://www.utopiaparkwaymusic.com Music is the best (FZ)... He said, the Node installer actually installs a mini/hidden version of Logic on the node computer-- this includes all the logic plug-ins. In order for AU plug-ins to work, third parties would have to make them compatible. It's not enough to simply be AU compatible, they would need to be able to run in the mini/hidden version of Logic. He said Apple is open to letting developers do this, but he was skeptical as to why they would want to.
