i just purchased a macbook pro.. and i want to ask two questions to
the "logic-family".
1) are the 800 and 400 FW ports on 2 SEPARATE buses?
2) where are people storing their samples as well as audio tracking
(playback & recording)... to external drives? if so, what's your
config? samples/virtual instruments on the 800 FW port, audio on the
400 FW port (along with your FW interface)?
thanks ahead for the assistance.

1) They're on the same bus.
2) I plug my audio interface into the firewire 800 bus, and then a firewire
800 Raid array containing samples and recordings into the other firewire 800
port on my audio interface. I've never had any trouble with
latency/glitches/pops/clicks. Since it's the same bus, it just doesn't
matter. However I've notices some firewire audio interfaces like to be the
first on the bus chain.
I think the best option however and one that I'm just upgrading to now, is a
eSata Express Card and an eSata Hardware RAID array to keep the data i/o
seperate from the audio i/o. That being said I'll reiterate the fact that I
haven't had any trouble with the existing 1 bus firewire setup despite a lot
of suggestions it was less than adequate (and I'm streaming multi-gigabyte
single-instruments off the drive without issues.)
You can also get a second express card Firewire adapter and gain the second
bus if needed.
