Even though it's relatively basic by today's standards - e.g. it
doesn't have built-in convolution processing or filtering (as part of
the programming as opposed to a separate plug-in), or sophisticated
MIDI scripting, or time-stretching, etc. - the EXS is extremely
efficient and in my opinion very convenient.
I do agree that it hasn't been updated in a while, and hardcore
sampling is advancing very quickly. But In what way is it difficult
to use? I find it very easy to create programs and performance set-
ups (keyswitches, modwheel fades, etc.) in the EXS.
And have you checked out Redmatica Keymap for it? Now that's a sexy
piece of kit.
These days the trend is for developers to license player versions of
other samplers (if they don't write their own as East West and VSL
have), and they generally support all the platforms rather than just
Logic. So I'm not sure how much point there would be to bringing EXS
up to speed unless it can leapfrog everything else - which not an
easy feat. Giga GVI is coming out for Mac fairly soon (I was shown
something with clear signs of life at Musikmesse last month), Kontakt
2 is awesome, MachFive and HALion are also out there...chances are
that people who need sophisticated samplers already have at least one
of those samplers.
