I'm (re)converting lots of files and I'm doing this get an optimal
result.. (it's meant for streaming/online radio)
so naturally I ask my self:
which is the best program/codec?
which program saves me time/is practicable?
my feeling is: itunes would be easy, but it's focus seems to be on
AAC/.m4a (and mp3 conversion is ok, but not very good)
I use logic (for aif/wav to mp3 conversion), but it's enyoing with
the stupid numbers on larger filenames!
(logic seems to use quicktime - at least the files will quicktime..)
I tried babara patch 4 with lame 3.97, but it won't accept the
installed lame, because it thinks it's version 0,00 ?!
any idea? would be highly apprechiated !!

I use iTunes Lame conversion script (try searching VersionTracker for iTunes
Lame) -- really good conversion especially with low bit rates (for dial-up
radio streams, etc.).

Logic (since v7) and Quicktime use the same codec, and my guess is
that iTunes does too. As for the quality it's all a matter of taste
but I never heard anything bad about the Quicktime codec here. (The
codec in previous Logic versions apparantly sucked) :o)

That depends on your workflow.. just try them out, you're the only one
who can answer that :o)

Does someone have a bit of AppleScript or something similar that can
do batch conversions?

I also prefer and use the itunes-LAME plugin. And it has a built in
applescript/batch
conversion feature that integrates with your playlist. Basically, you
highlight tracks, choose
'import with lame' from the menu it will have added to your itunes menu bar
and voila. And
of course you can set encoding options in a little window before you whack
the 'import'
button.
