I am very curious to hear back from George and find out what he meant by
"never ending problems with Ensemble". All I've heard so far was a
lot of
success stories with one or two people complaining on the earliest beta
drivers not working with longer cables (?). Really need to know the details
before I take the plunge myself.

I've owned Ensemble now for about four months, and I'm finding the
unit is rock stable running under the newest drivers.
Ensemble is especially useful in my set-up now that it has the stand-
alone mode so I just set it up like I need to in Maestro to integrate
with my Protools 96i/o via ADAT, and use Ensemble's better converters
and mic pre when working with Protools.
I also use Logic Pro, and Ensemble's integration with LP makes it a
breeze to use.
Cheers,
Craig

Hi Andy,
Problems with the Ensemble:
1) It often needs to be reinitialized. It seems that the Ensemble
looses contact with the Mac Pro way too often. Then the digital outs
stop working, but the headphone out's do... It's gotten so bad that
one client uses headphones when working on deadlines in order to
avoid becoming frustrated. I don't have any specific issues that
cause this that I can quote off the top of my head... sorry. I end up
dealing with allot of people over a month, so I can't remember every
specific issue, only generalities.
2) Not being allowed to run System sound digitally at the same time
as Logic. The Maestro application's patch bay only allows the user to
assign one audio stream to one set of outputs. Because of this, my
client must run their system sound through analog outputs. This means
adding a mixer just to monitor itunes. He does soundtrack work, and
requires referencing older material all the time. I know he could
simply drag and drop the files into Logic but this would mean
multiple copies of data potentially all over the place. I can do this
kind of thing with any of my other FW devices, why not the one that
costs so much money, and is supposed to be the end all be all...
3) Unreliability when using FW drives on the same bus. This isn't an
Apogee specific issue, but it still makes FW a poor choice over a PCI
based audio card. Also, Logic has a hidden extra buffer for firewire
audio the end user has no control over. That means higher latency.
Rant on....
All this said, I do want to explain why some people have become so
disillusioned: Most of these guys are "old school". They come from
a
time when most recording was done on 24 track decks through big
consoles. Most of the "pro" studio's have either a tech on site,
or
on call. If an issue came up, it was usually dealt with quickly.
Unfortunately today, there are way too many "tech" people who
don't
have the answers, or end up breaking a system when trying to fix it...
I find that even when I need to contact tech support for most
companies, the people on the phone either don't have a clue, call
back days later when the issue requires an immediate answer, or the
worst, you get an auto reply by email with a suggestion of things to
try out.
Heck, even Apple charges $200 for a tech support call... and often
doesn't know an issue that has been brought up on the LUG for months.
Rant off....
Take care, George Leger III

George,
Problem #1, as far as the Ensemble losing contact with Mac, was
resolved for me when I installed the last few firmware updates. I
can't speak to the digital out problem or problem #2. Problem #3,
yes having a FW drive on the same bus causes some funkiness.

I will always recommend a PCI based audio card over FW...

Hi Friends,
I'm experiencing that Logic's MIDI arpeggiator do not work when Logic
is slaving to MIDI Clock sync. Has anyone else seen this? Any hints
on how to solve the problem?
All my arpeggiation setups work fine when Logic's sync is set to
internal. When following external MIDI Clock the MIDI input is being
stuck in the arpeggiator.
