Thanks guys, Unfortunately the computer I'll be using is a iMac G5 PPC which doesn't have an optical in so I will need to buy some unit that I can connect up to the firewire/usb ports. It's a shame there is no way to copy over the cue data, although using strip silence is a good idea - probably the best alternative. Thanks for the help, Jack

That's it you two. The gloves are off - except I'm on the side of using compression everywhere. (tricked you ;-) Recording comps MUST be analog BTW. A little to a bit when recording and more than that when mixing - but it has to be the right kind of settings and the right style of compressor. Something slow and squeezy for tracking like an opto on the Avalon 737 or LA2A for example and then my fave for mixing is the Farichild from UAD followed by a good deesser - since Logic 8, Logic's own compressor actually makes a great deesser with the improved sidechain features, or the excellent and free Spitfish or in my case the UAD precision Deesser, then an EQ - current fave is the UAD Neve 1081 then finally followed by a gentle final squeeze from something like Logic's compressor in Platinum mode but slowish attack and max around 2dB reduction. It is ALL in the performance agreed, followed in distant second place by the acoustics of the recording room. Even a $250 condenser mic will do the trick if all the other things mentioned above are in place - but of course a nice mic & pre is better. Overall though and after the performance, the recording gear is not as important as the room sound IMO. There's an optional handclap sound which loads into the 'Extras' slot which I absolutely love and really works well. They're currently offering a bundle deal for both products that gives you 20% off. You'll need the Retro ADpak otherwise the only sound you can load into the 'Extras' slot is a cowbell. Regardless, XLN Addictive Drums is a very good drums plug-in that's well worth checking out. xlnaudio.com Best, Robin ------------------------------------

First, the difference is small, but still quite noticeable to my ear -- the Ensemble sounds more analog, while the 2882 sounds a bit more sterile (perfect for mastering AFAICT). Second, the new version of Apogee drivers are rock solid -- no more kernel panics. No loopback feature though, so I agree with the rest of Nick's comments here. Hi, Thanks for all the useful suggestions. I just looked at how cheap 4gig or Ram is for my MacBook Pro on the Crucial website and my eyes popped out of my head! That was a real no brainer. I don't think it will solve my current problem but will definately help in the future as I add software instruments and effects etc. This weekend I will get to test my set-up with the ideas you have mentioned, and hopefully install my new Motu 8pre! I don't suspect it to be a hardware problem as the error only occurs when I add a software instrument. I have been thinking about Logic Studio and Leopard, but really my current system should be able to cope easily. Anyway I shall let you know how I get on! Cheers so far... Simon.

I take it you're not that impressed .. Not by the metering, but the Ensemble is an excellent interface. A lot of people were reporting problems when I checked it out about a year ago (as part of a huge article about interfaces in VI mag), but I didn't encounter any of them. As a matter of fact, I had the box connected for a few weeks and it just worked reliably without incident. Frankly, what disappointed me is the "Logic integration," which amounts to... [party whistle] ...a grey screen that duplicates most of the functions you can access in more graphic splendor by clicking on an icon in your dock rather than hunting for it under a Logic menu. Okay, it does recall settings with your logic session. But of course so does MH. silvennoinen: > > Oh lord, tell me what to doooo? I'd be happy to leave a message on his answering machine, but I think I worded his instructions in a slanted way that I didn't really intend. It wasn't my intention to say that you shouldn't look at the Ensemble, because you definitely should. Apogee has a long history of making really high quality equipment, and they did a very good job with the Ensemble. And in all fairness, someone else might not agree with me that the sound quality differences are slight. A lot of this is always going to be subjective. Finally, I don't mean to sound arrogant and think that people should hang on every ridiculous opinion I spew. :) It's just that we paparazzi are supposed to be objective in public, and I don't want someone to think I'm saying the MH boxes are *better*, because they're not; they have advantages and so does the Ensemble. I'm using 8.0.2. with OS 10.4.11 on a dual G5. I do understand the the channel strip mode setting of mono, stereo, etc. at the bottom of the strip. The strips all defaulted to mono, although I can change them to stereo. So that's ok. What bothers me is the files in the bin - they show up as split stereo, not interleaved. Now that I think about it, maybe this is a preference setting - I'll snoop around. Doug ------------------------------------

Hi, This just happened, and I'm not sure what to do next... never seen this one, and I can't find anything on the Apple forums or here at the LUG" Added a new instrument, chose "Backward Clean Guitar" from the library, then got this error message ("Audio Configuration Is Damaged.") The song file works, but the dialog keeps pooping up whenever I attempt to alter any audio objects or inserts... Any ideas? Mac OS 10.4.11 with Logic 8.0.2 and the song is new in Logic Pro 8 as well, so it's not a corrupted audio or midi object from an old autoload. Hi Im gigging using Logic Pro 8.02 with a Macbook a wx7 & FCB1010. I use 5 different exs24/sculptures so I have them saved as Channel Performances that I use on one channel and dial up from the pedals with Prog changes. However I find that the Sends (number of and amount) aren't saved with the different Channel Performances.E.g with Channel Performance 1 I want reverb and delay, with CP 2 I want just delay. Is there a way of getting them to do this or do I have to put each synth on a different track? Thanks for your help John ------------------------------------

I have solved the problem by turning off the AirPort device! This seemed to me the craziest of suggestions, but I had this really weird feeling that it would be the one to solve my problem!!! I am now happily playing my EXS24 pad sound along with all my aux monitor tracks of hardware synths! This will be a great help until I can buy the original synths (which I much prefer, crazy I know!). Thanks for all the suggestions, I am looking at all the other possible improvements to my system. I have 4gig RAM arriving next week as well, so I really will have a beast of a laptop :) My MOTU 8Pre arrived as well, though I have just realised that if I want to seamlessly integrate it with my MOTU 828mk3 I should have bought some ADAT lightpipe cables to connect it up. Still I can install it as a second audio device using the firewire cable, though I might just wait until I have some ADAT lightpipe cables, Thank you for your help once again, I don't know what I would do without this forum!!!
