Dunno, never tested them side-by-side. All I can say is the Duet has
the same warm (I'd call it analog warm) and smooth sound as my
Ensemble. Speaking of the latter, it has a decent clock generator
(tested by syncing my samplers and other digital equipment to it) and
the warmth is achieved by boosting 80 - 100 Hz a dB or 2 and very very
slightly (around -0.5 dB) cutting the 3 k range.

Hi All,
I'm trying to install SonicCouture's lovely HangDrum kontakt

anywhere of my choosing, I imagine?

There are separate issues here that I think are getting mixed up.
The Agere issue has to do with some types of interface not being
recognized when plugged in.
The general, chipset-independent issue that has been with us for a
long time, is that the firewire supplies on Mac laptops can't handle
the inrush current on some bus-powered interfaces when you first plug
them in--the power supply shuts down due to overcurrent. This is the
case with the Metric Halo interfaces, among others. Apparently Apple
changed the power specs at some point. These interfaces will often
work fine if you "bootstrap" them with external power, which is
somewhat inconvenient, though the MH interfaces can be booted with a
couple of 9V batteries.
If nothing lights up, you're seeing the second problem, not the first.

I did indeed wonder that myself, whether Logic actually saves each plug-ins
actual settings, or just matches names. Thinking about it, one must assume
it should be the former, as surely any changes made to the preset, when
Logic was re-booted, would be reset.
For example, I put on Space Designer, with the On Stage Drums preset (my
fave); but change the reverb time. If Logic simply saves the fact that I
used "On Stage Drums", but does not save data from the Space
Designer plug-in, when I rebooted Logic it would theoretically reset the
plug-in to the saved preset, which would change my reverb time. I've never
seen it do that; therefore, coming to think of it, it must save the actual
settings of the plugin.
Any thoughts?

I don't think I'm stupid. I am 49 and have a strong engineer background; But
LOGIC is absolutely incomprehenseible as MIDI recording is concern !!!!
I have an exetrnal XV 2020 that is no use as I can"t bounce any project
using it; I have a Logic 8 with Presonus Firebox interface and frankly it is
written nowhere in the user manual how to bounce midi tracks.
Some of you have answsred in a manner that no human can understad ( saying
we have to Re-assign a midi track to audio something which does not mean
anything, amidi track HAS to be recorded as MIDI and NOT audio , otherwise
what" the point of having MIDI tracks ?
The other solution which uses setting up environments in Logic defies human
Logic. So I'm ok to just create music with EXS and other VST but frankly it
is unacceptable that nowhere in the manual it is written how to record -
because what's the point of recording MIDI if you can't bounce it ? - MIDI
instruments ?
If someone feels I'm a complete moron to ask, fine say it, but after TWO
years of Logic 7 and now 8 I feel depressed to be unable to use by externaml
Expander.
thanks if someone understand the question.

Wherever you want, I for one put them next to the respective sample folders.

You have to record your MIDI instruments to audio (either the whole mix or
preferably track-by-track so you can edit them separately).

Perhaps because there is a big question mark regarding the sense of
the phrase "bounce Midi tracks".

Remember that the purpose of Midi tracks is to record/playback note and
other information used to control some sound generating
devices such as your XV 2020. Midi is not audio! Ask yourself these
questions - when you have recorded Midi into logic, you use it to play
back the sound in the XV, right? How do you hear those sounds? Do you
have two cables connecting the audio outputs of that device through a
mixing console to which a pair of speakers are connected? If so, then
hopefully you can realise that the audio you are hearing is going nowhere
near logic, and as such you are not giving logic anything it can bounce.
Fortunately, the solution is relatively straightforward. Plug those
cables into two firebox line audio inputs. Set up a stereo audio
channel in logic as an input channel, the input has to be set to the
corresponding firebox channels. I don't have a firebox so cannot go
into any great detail here, but it really shoudn't be difficult, providing
you have grasped the concept of midi data and audio being two seperate
entities. Once you see that signal flowing into logic, there is the stuff
you need to bounce. I would for the sake of simplicity suggest simply
recording this as audio. Take some time to go through the Logic Pro getting
started manual - there is a fairly decent explanation of audio and midi
in Appendix A.

You really shouldn't have to worry about getting involved with the
environment for something this basic whne using logic 8.

Of course, you can bounce internal VIs such as the EXS 24, because they use
a Midi recording to generate an audio signal.

Not at all. It seems that there are just one or two concepts you need to
grasp, after that you should be flying.

Hi Folks,
I'm about to order a new 8-core Mac Pro, and I wonder if anyone can give me
a definitive
answer to this:
Would Logic's graphics performance (esp. screen redraws) benefit from a
better-than-stock
video card? The stock card has 256 MB RAM, but there's an option for a 512
MB card for not
much more. My understanding is that the only people to really benefit from
the upgrade are
gamers or folks using 3D graphics apps.
Or put another way, is any of Logic's GUI offloaded to the video card? I'm
considering
upgrading to a pair of 30" displays, and that's an awful lot of pixels
to refresh when changing
screensets. If I'm gonna drop the $$$, I want the fastest graphics
performance I can get.
Thanks!

Hi Jim,

Probably a tiny bit, but is it really worth the extra $$$? I have a quad
2.66 with a 256 MB NVidia 7300 and I am happy with the performance it
provides. New octocore macs have even better cards as standard and all of
them are capable of handling 2 30" displays, so IMHO you don't need a
more expensive card unless you're going to do video or 3D design. Just MMHO.

Has anyone used these? Checked out the videos and sounds, and it's
almost too good to be true. Feasible on a MBP 2.33 with 3 gigs of
RAM? Thanks for any feedback - I never even heard of this product
before, I confess. Is it working well with Logic 8 following your
upgrade, Clive? OT, has anyone used it with ProTools or Garage Band?
I'm still exploring the website but am extremely impressed.

Right, since MIDI is only data you need to get the audio output of
your external modules into Logic.
Easiest method is to plug the stereo outputs of the module into
a pair of inputs on your audio card/device/interface, arm two mono
record tracks and then play the MIDI tracks while Logic records the
audio output. After recording don't forget to set the pans full
left/right so you have stereo playback.
The other way is to plug your module audio outputs into your audio
device inputs and use the utility plugin "I/O" as an
"insert" on an
audio track.
The I/O plug allows you send your audio card's input/output to the
track. This way allowa a real-time bounce of your external module.

Thanks Andy, that's exactlly the question I'm asking. To further clarify, I
know the new stock
cards will handle a pair of 30" panels, but has anyone actually seen
Logic 8 running on a
setup like that? On my current G5 rig, it takes over 2 seconds (!) to
change some of my
screensets, and that's with a pair of 22" panels (each at 1600 x 1200).
That may not sound
like much, but add it up over the course of a day, and it's aggravating.
Guess I'm a productivity hog - I'd love nothing less than 3 massive displays
with lightning-
fast response. One big Arrange in the middle, mixer on one side, editor on
the other...
A man can dream ;-)
Open Help/Logic Pro User manual
Go to p. 246. The part you're interested in starts with the
"Processing External MIDI Instruments With Effects" header.
This explains one way to record/bounce external MIDI stuff as audio.
One thing: this will only work in real time bounces, as is clearly
stated.
Quite clear to this 48 year old. I'm using a slightly different
method myself from the 'old' days, but this is easier I think.

HI Judith,
Those .nki files are for the Native Instruments Kontakt sampler.
(unless you have Kontakt, they wont work with Logic's EXS).
From memory, there was an EXS version of that instrument. I could
well be wrong about that.

Just record your midi parts to audio tracks and then you can offline
bounce the lot. Ot simply use realtime bounce which will include the
midi and any other external audio.

Just installed 8.01. Where do I find the system performance meter that was
in version7?
Hello!
This may seem like a pathetically simple question but here it goes: I'm
only using a very basic system with an Mbox and Logic
Express(7.0.1).(yes I will upgrade soon to the full version since now
it's so cheap!).
Up until now I've mainly been recording midi instruments with a few
vocal overdubs. I would run the buffer very low and found the timing
excellent.(low latency) But lately I've been recording the driest most
sparse acoustic guitars imaginable and I seem to be having delay or
timing issues. After banging my head against the wall for 3 days trying
every combination/setup possible, I've started wondering about the mute
button??
If it's on(muted) during tracking do I "lose" the direct input
signal
and end up listening to a slightly delayed version? (I'm not running any
software and have the software monitoring switched off). Or a simpler
way of putting this. Should I have the mute button on while I track?
Through trial and error, it seems that at least when I overdub a 2nd
guitar, I encounter some sort of a latency delay if I have the track in
the arrange window muted.
Any help to clear this up would very appreciated. I've looked through
the manual and found nothing on this most basic of subjects.
thanks for any help "out there"...

Double click the little performance meter on the Transport.

It¹s pretty small...

For what it's worth, I'm using Logic 8 with dual 23's on a 3GHz
octocore with the stock video card and see no video performance
problems whatsoever.
