I finally stole my son's computer (Because he got a
new one), and I want to use it for Logic 5x. Where can
I find the minimum system requirements in cluding RAM?
Thanks

You are right, the environment is hardwired. That is by no means a
usual or flexible setup but rather dedicated MIDI routing for a
specific purpose.
I jump in here because I am working with Scott on that and we could
really need some comments about Logic's ability for MIDI
multitracking. Anyone doing that extensively?
___
Here are the basic facts:
1 - There are 4 hardware synths on their own ports, each one sends on
MIDI channel 1.
2 - One port carries channels 1-4 of a 5th synth and channel 5 from
the 6th synth (I think that is the only hardware-set channel).
3 - One port with a virtual drumset which may or may not go through a
separate drum module which also registers as a separate port.
4 - One port with a keyboard/controller to control plugins and
playing softsynths.
5 - One of the external synths sends a clock via an additional port
(I don't know what for and if external sync is used or even makes
sense here).
6 - The audio interface provides enough inputs for all.
___
And here are the targets and requirements (or wishes, at least):
1 - A couple of musicians should be able to pick any selection of
hardware synths and record MIDI to Logic on dedicated tracks.
2 - Setting MIDI channels on hardware is not desirable.
3 - It should be possible to record audio together with MIDI.
4 - I assume that it should be possible to record audio via the
external synths after the musicians left, based on the recorded MIDI
data.
5 - It should be possible to playback through the currently connected
hardware synthesizers.
6 - Monitoring all incoming data within Logic is required.
7 - The setup should allow to exchange external synths without
changing anything in Logic.
---
Scott might correct me if anything of the above is not true.
We managed the first half of the setup (recording) by setting fixed
channels after the Physical Input via transformer/instrument combos:
transformers set/split the channels and are cabled to standard
instruments which are assigned to arrange tracks. Logic is set to
automatically demix by channel, recording works.
Simultaneous audio recording works too, there is just the Logic bug
that an audio channel has to be selected before recording starts (in
MIDI/Audio mixed mode).
After some confusion with Aux'es the monitoring works in standard
configuration, via the input objects.
Now we are going to look at the MIDI output to trigger the external
synths. That part is hard to test for me because I have just one old
hardware synth and only 4 input channels on my interface. Scott does
not want to configure the hardware synths so I guess we will need
some switching to avoid loops while the synths are played by the
people, right? Maybe a single button for recording and playback?
Btw, I support the method not to configure hardware. I prefer also to
leave external gear in a default state as long as possible. If
something goes wrong you can simple do a factory reset, no need to
feed SysEx or go through setup protocols and probably introduce new
failures.
Any hints and comments are welcome, especially for the alternating
record/playback stuff which seems to become unconvenient. I guess a
device which switches several configured audio and MIDI paths at once
does not exist on the market, at least not for a reasonable price? I
thought about a mechanical switch because the system is always
brought to a halt before switching and good components do not alter
the signal. But I prefer to do it via software.

A happy New Year to you all!
Many thanks to the admins for the great job they do. Many thanks to
all newbies for their sometimes weird questions wich give us the
opportunity to look like full of wisdom. Many thanks to all who
helped me and others to get things running. Many thanks to the people
who spread out their experience and ideas to expand our horizon.
And many thanks to Logic. We complain a lot about it but it works day
after day and produces wonderful music. With a little help, of
course :-)
Cu next year.

Thanks to all who provided counsel on my question about
"overloading"
my Powerbook. I am interested in upgrading RAM. I searched the Web and
found that there were two common styles of 1GB RAM modules for
Powerbooks, however, how do I figure out which style is appropriate
for my machine?
I purchased my PB in September. It is the 2nd most current hardware
(as they updated the platform in October).
Thanks.
When you're working in the Score Editor Window you will find that switching
off 'Interpretation' in the box on the left might help.
Also, what you see is affected by the Score Quantize value ('Qua') in the
same box.
You will often find that you need to actually click in the Rest (break??)
that you want.
e.g. If you want a dotted crotchet (1/4 note) followed by a quaver (1/8)
rest you will find that when you click in a dotted crotchet it will be
displayed as a minim (1/2). You must then enter a quaver rest from the
partbox after the note. Then it will look right.
Good luck
Hi,
I've just bought a presonus firebox (£250 UK) - i think it's about
$299 in the US...with 6 in and out and 2 great preamps. it's portable
looks good and feels so much better than the emi 6|2 and preamp box i
was using before.
i'm using a g4 laptop 1ghz 1gb ram so portability was really important
for me - also quality of preamps was important as i want to mic up my
guitar and capture my voice and do field recordings on a budget.
i think there is a good review on the soundonsound website... or just
type http://www.presonus.com/firebox.html#reviews...
some would go for a presonus firepod...which i think is also portable
and a step up from the firebox.
hopes that helps a bit.

Im still running it on a (soon to be upgraded) G4/800. My RAM is
maxed out though at 1.5GB so you would probably do well to bump that
up a bit more.. It works, but obviously I cant get the plugin count a
dual G4 would using VIs but eh thats why when my tax return comes Im
getting a dual Gigadesigns CPU upgrade hehe..
It should work just fine for you.
With regards to the Digi 001 though, I think you may be limited to
sticking with Mac OS 10.3. My roommate hasnt upgraded his PT station
to Tiger because of something or other, but I do think he can upgrade
his software from Digi for $100 or so and it will work in Tiger 10.4

Interpretation off?
You will see the parameter box to the left when you select a staff in
the score editor and unfortunately the interpretation always defaults to
on. This can be useful sometimes, especially when you are playing in
from a keyboard, but I prefer to have it off (be quiet at the back of
the class) when writing via mouse directly into the score.

I don't know what kind of set up you have and I can't relate to your
experience which is, of course, very generally described. What I do is to
play ideas or parts into Logic and then edit in the Score view. I think you
have quantize or other set-ups fixed so that Logic is "helping"
you.
let us know what you find out.

You can delete them all, the one not in the Logic folder and the whole
logic folder as long as you don't mind losing key commands, project
manager info. You can also just delete prefs without key commands from
the LogicPro>Prefeernces menu
To make a new autoload just rename your old autoload (for safety) or
delete it), boot logic, make your edits and then save as template and
name it "autoload"

Apple menu -> About This Mac
Then click on the "More Info" button.
Then click on the "Memory" entry at the left side of
subsequent window.
The information below the "Speed" tab will be the
salient piece of information.

Kontakt (when WILL they learn how to spell?) has, for a while now, had a
Save option that includes saving the samples with the instrument(s). I use
it in ProTools a lot. You have to use the plugin's interface, not the host
app, but it's definitely doable.

So will anyone from Apple see what Peter wrote?
I can't believe Logic won't see any difference between a midi channel on a
differnt port. If I am using 10 midi channels, that leaves me with 6 left
over midi channels for software synths?
How do I contact Apple about this?
[reposted]
A little while ago it was discussed how cumbersome it was to have to
add a bus, output, etc. to the Arrange Window in order for it to be
shown in the Track mixer (which mirrors only the contents of the
Arrange window unless global mode is turned on). I found a little bit
of a shortcut that makes this a bit more streamlined while mixing:
Let's say you're in the Track Mixer and you want to add a bussed
effect, say for some drum tracks. You add the bus send to your
track(s), and then double-click the bus button to turn on global mode
in the Track Mixer and take you to the bus. Once you have the bus
selected, option-double-click it and it will be added to the Arrange
window, at which point it will remain in the Track Mixer when you turn
off global mode.
(This is documented in the manual, but I'd never noticed it before. I
only recently started using the Track Mixer after years of mixing in
the Audio Mixer environment window.)
Enjoy!

Hi,
this is a question for those using MIDI.
Until last week I used a stealth serial port to connect my midi interfaces
(Unitor, Amt8) to my G4.
Worked very well.
Now, with my new G5 Dual 2.7, I think about using USB for MIDI.
(In fact the new machine does not have the modem connector on the
mainboard...
there is an empty place instead.. looks like Apple thought that no one would
miss it...
so I just cannot connect a stealth port... what a mess! )
I remember to have read some complaints about the tightness of timing
using USB for MIDI (my main concern is not latency... it's jitter).
Is Midi via USB usable?
(I mean just a little better than human players..;-)
Should I better go with MOL?
I'm using Logic 7.01, OSX 10.3.2 on a Dual 2.7.

Help! I need to quickly resize a finished score and parts to print
them both out on a certain number of pages and can't seem to get logic
7 to re-size either. If I hit print and then reduce it in the print
dialog, the page edit view is simply printed smaller, but on the same
number of pages. No use at all. I need to know the simple way to
reduce everything and be able to view it within logic before I print
it. How???
Well it pisses me off.. I spent 4 grand for a Quad G5, and Logic Pro, and
Logic doesn't handle midi correctly when it is supposed to have the best
midi features in any package. I still can't get over the port/midi channel
thing in Logic. This is driving me crazy!! Should I pay 200 bucks to call
apple and hope they have a solution? Or should I demand a refund on Logic
and use Pro tools LE, or Cubase.
PORT1 Midi channel 1 should not record to another midi track that is PORT2
Midi Channel 1.

On a more helpful note, since I haven't seen any other suggestions...
You're talking about a problem with a particular "Song" not
sequence,
right ('cause sequences can become corrupt)?
If so, do you have a bunch of sequence objects starting at the same
time, with maybe some heavy duty effects, that correspond timewise
with your overload?
If so, try to reduce the load that's introduced at that particular
point. Stagger sequences, remove use of effects on those sequences. A
sudden demand for file and effect information at one instant has been
a suspected culprit in some of my cases. Logic should be able to
"look ahead" and spread the demand, but check it out.
Hope this helps (though I think your live playing is best :)).
