Subject: Logic hit kit
Message #189401
Hi I've just bought a little mickey mouse music production kit which contains Logic 'hit kit' software, to see if I fancy developing this as a hobby. I've fallen at the first hurdle as I can't import the drum tracks from the accompanying cd. I have an arrange window open, I've highlighted an audio track but when i try to import a track, i get the message 'please select an audio track in an arrange window' what am i doing wrong? And has anyone heard of the 'hit kit'? thanks d

Subject: second hard drive
Message #189404
A few days ago I tried to install in my G5 dual 1,8/2 GB Ram, Logic 7.01 a second hd 250 GB (Maxtor SATA) for samples, audiofiles etc. and there was no go to initialize it, or better, sometimes yes and sometimes not: since there was no way to inialitialize it as a whole volume, I had to partition it and so some partitions are activated and I can see them on the desktop and write something inside, but after a reboot (very long, anyway) they are vanished or it disappears just one partition instead (it appears greyed out in disc utility). The hardware test reported following error message: 2 STF/8/3: B (lower). Tried to invert the two drives and the only thing that changed was the the order of the message (2 STF/8/3: A (upper). I hoped it was a software issue, so I installed yesterday the new Tiger, but without any difference in the behaviour. I wonder if somebody has the same problem, what do I have to do? Please help. Subject: [LUG] [LAW] Logic has problem with 3ghz CPUs?
Message #189408
By the way, yesterday i upgraded my system with a 3gz into an assus. Almost all files done with my old 1.7 Ghz cpu are not working propertly. It searches for the files,as usual, and then redirects me to Mictosoft to report my mistake,Co0l! I changed the drivers settings to "none" and loaded the project. all Vsts were crossed(non working). Saved as the project. I changeD the drivers settings into M-AUDIO EASI,reloaded the driver, closed Logic and opened the file with the new driver... It played for a bit and then crashed... Opened again the project , reloaded Asio driver... he was loading the vst's and when finally controls again the Asio driver (it does it on start/finish of loading)... Crashed. I suspect thats the reason for upgrading to mac,or just downgrate to pc's 1.7 cpu to finish my project. Salut ;-)

You should then mute tracks one by one and bypass plugins one by one to see where the overload is comming from...also could depend on what soundcard your running and how much that requires to playback audio...and make sure you have the latest drivers for your soundcard. Also upgradign your CPU will improve performance but how much ram you have will more of a effect especially when trying to playback audio, run plugins and softsynths or samplers. -- Regards Mike

Yes also, to the fact that you can do many more tracks of basic audio on Cubase SX than you can on Logic Pro. However, when you start adding plug-ins, the game changes. Logic does a much better job with CPU usage than Cubase SX does. Not only does it do a better job with CPU, I believe the plug-ins that ship with Logic are MUCH better than the ones you get in Cubase, and I would rather use Audio Units and Apple Loops than VST plug ins and REX files. Could you give a correct address to your Statocaster Disaster (176 tracks), I'd still love to hear it. Your link comes up empty. Thanks for the test results, from Sweden! Cheers

Subject: Tidbits on Successful System Updates
Message #189415
Hello LUG-Heads: On the OS side of things, I would like to chime in that I also have had no trouble with Logic Pro 7.0.1 (or any other software) after updating to Mac OS X v10.3.9. For folks who have trepidation about upgrading, may I advance the following points: 1. Many folks who've had problems updating are sloppy about how they do their upgrades. That is, they don't perform the 'update ritual' before a system update or upgrade. The update ritual goes something like this: * Make sure your hard drive is in good running condition: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's 'Repair Disk' function (or use a third-party drive utility such as Norton Disk Doctor, DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro). * Reboot from your internal hard drive (the volume containing the Mac OS X that is to be updated), and run Disk Utility's 'Repair Disk Permissions' function. * Install the update. (I prefer combo-updaters when available). * Reboot from the internal hard drive and repair disk permissions once again (using Disk Utility's 'Repair Disk Permissions' function). 2. Updates are created for a reason: They sometimes provided added functionality, but more importantly, they FIX BUGS. No software company likes to brag about all the bugs they've fixed, as it implies the bugs were there to begin with. However, we live in that crazy little place I like to call reality. I'll take the updates with my cod liver oil. 3. Whenever possible, do updates on machines that aren't 'mission-critical'. Or, install on another drive or partition to check for reliability. 4. Let at least a month go by to 'let the ashes fall'; i.e. let the update get out there and tested by the masses before you install it. I will not install Tiger for at least another month or two. Can you spell 10.4.1? I can. 5. Remember: you're reading postings in a user's group. The main reason people post notes/requests for info, etc. is that they're having trouble. The vast majority are NOT posting; i.e. They haven't had trouble updating. 6. Say a prayer to the Generic Entity in the sky that created your sorry little ass. (This point is merely a recommendation). Now, let's see... Where was I... if I could only figure out Logic .... Regards, Stephen Laianca - Just up the road from the Bada Bing - Fugedaboudit! ... --

I agree with all Stephen's suggestions. I would just add that I've learned a lesson recently, probably well-known to the more experienced. My upgrade woes were not with Logic or OS upgrades per se, but with my audio interface not yet having a driver for 10.3.9. I also recently installed an additional internal hard drive to be used for Logic only. Because it was a 160 and the existing drive was an 80, I decided to swap everything from the 80 to the 160 just so the drive for general use was the bigger one. The 80 will have only a system, Logic, and related music apps on it. I have external fw drives which I will dedicate one for samples and sounds, and one to record to. In doing the swap I used Apple's Restore function in Disk Utility- supposed to function much like Carbon Copy Cloner. I can tell you that it's not perfect. It's taken far less time than re-installing everything this general drive had on it would have taken, but it's still taken hours in smoothing things out with multiple runnings of DiskWarrior, repairing permissions, installing updates (everything except 10.3.9), and even reinstalling Safari, which somehow got trashed in the process. I even did a clean re-install of the system on the general drive (which is why all the updates were required.) And there may be other things that are trashed that I haven't discovered yet. So now both drives have 10.3.8 on them, back from 10.3.9, and everything finally seems to be working, as far as I know. So the lesson I've learned is this: don't upgrade the OS until you know for sure there's an interface driver available for that upgrade. Otherwise you'll upgrade the system, fine- but you'll lose interface function and spend hours reversing things. Mine (M-Audio FW Audiophile) works fine in .8- doesn't like .9. James

This is incorrect. When learning a plug-in parameter, it doesn't matter if the control surface is supported or not. Also unsupported control surfaces allow binding assignments to a certain plug-in's parameter. > Controller Assignments > were introduced to change settings of supported surfaces. Letting us > assign our own commands is a nice and logical idea but at the moment it > is only half-way implemented. Processing of Controller Assignments is exactly the same code, no matter if supported or unsupported control surface. Where you are right (there are differences) is: * only supported control surfaces can show feedback * only automatable track parameters and key commands key be learned for controller assignments * learning plug-in parameters only works in the "bound to plug-in ID" mode - not in the mode "parameter x or current insert" Regarding the track association, you have to know that Logic by default sets "Selected" track for assignments learned for the currently selected track. To learn an assignment for a certain track (e.g. track 3 in the fader bank) you first have to select another track. To switch a control between different meanings, you can set up zones and modes, using the Controller Assignments Editor. There were however several user interface bugs in version 7.0.x which are all fixed in version 7.1. Zones and Modes is the way controls (e.g. encoders) are switched in assignment for supported control surfaces. To validate this, just open the Controller Assignments Editor and operate some controls on a supported control surface. You will see how modes are switched. > We need at least storable user > preferences and a way to bypass connected controllers. ??
