Yes, I'm on it. I just thought it was a tad inconsistent that there's
an EXS list but no list for other VIs.

Well, when I'm recording the chorus after already recording the verse, I use
punch-in recording to record the chorus. I need to overlap the end of the
verse because I tend to come in just a hair ahead of the actual start of the
measure. So I end up with on measure worth of overlap. I have to do the same
thing for at the other end for similar reasons. Now I've got overlap at both
ends. I can clean up the beginning overlap easy, but not tail end.
Anyway, the overlap is unavoidable. At least for the way I record music.
Hope that explains the "why"...

Hi,
In another DAW there is a command called "trim" that given no
audio
selection will "strip silence" off of the start and finish of a
file
_only_. This is extremely useful for when you have just recorded an
external synth sequenced with midi and know that the relative timing
between the notes are correct, but where the clip starts isn't due to
midi and/or audio card latency. Once the silence is cut off of the
front of the file you can snap it to it's position and the timing will
be on.
I know about strip silence. From what I understand this will affect
the whole audio file, breaking it into regions based on the threshold
and parameters. I only want to "strip silence" for the silence at
the
start of the file. Using the marquee tool with smart on seems to do an
"ok" job of this, but that tool always seems suspicious to me,
like
i'm not sure what i'm going to get.
Is there a simple way to do this in Logic?
Thanks,

I just purchased a 14" ibook, 1.3Ghz/60Gb/airport/etc for $1049 from
the
apple refurb site. It is great for small mixes and live recording.

If I only knew how to direct Stylus RMX to the correct file or copy the file
or an alias to the
appropriate spot.
Any suggestions? Tech support hasn't figured this out so I'm hoping for some
logic guru
genius to come forth with the answer.

The iBook video card is in fact fully capable of monitor spanning, but
Apple disable this in firmware as a point of differentiation between
the "consumer" iBook and "pro" Powerbook. There is
however a very
unsupported hack which enables monitor spanning on the iBook.

Ah, so you have a tiny overlap. Does it matter which is on top? If
they are MIDI regions they will both play. It would only matter which
was on top if one was obscuring the other, and you could sort that by
"create new track for overlapped regions" from the track menu.
I would either merge the regions or else create a new track (same
instrument)

There's quite a few good reasons to record the MIDI instrument to audio
before the final mix. All of the audio plugins (including third party)
become available. That synth part might really come alive with a bit of
compression and eq. There are some great tools and efx that can only be
done with audio tracks. Also, I think the final mix benefits from mixing
purely from audio tracks, I couldn't prove it but it feels like everything
sits more comfortably in the mix. Have you ever tried it?

Strip silence on the whole file, then glue tool or keycommand.

Just received my EXS Old Lady from the Northern Sounds group buy. Anyone
else get this and load it successfully? I copied the .exs files to the
Logic exs file and put all the samples with my other samples on my second
drive just like I have done with all my other exs instruments but when I
call up the old lady files it can¹t the .wav files. This has never been
a
prob before (and I ran project manager to resolve links etc). Have I missed
something obvious? In the documentation it talks about using stuffit to
expand files, although there were no stuffit expandable files on the disc.
Would be interested to know whether anyone else has managed to do this ok.
Thanks in advance

This is actually yet another wondrous 'L7 Bug'. It was discussed a few weeks
back when I
first ran into it. Unlike earlier versions of Logic, no amount of clicking
on a hidden region
will bring it to the 'top'. It's extremely annoying and serves no useful
purpose.
I have lots of old songs where an imprecise edit left two overlapping
regions, say between
two different takes in a 'comp' track. In this case, you can't just use
"tie regions by length/
position'. You want to examine each track in close-up and fine tune the edit
point where
one ends and the other starts. In Logic7, this is no longer possible without
shifting one of
your overlapping regions to another track! Just what I need, another
'workaround'. Hey,
maybe they should change the name of the program from Logic 'Pro' to Logic
Workaround?
You know, I used to be bugged just because L7 had so many old bugs still
crawling around
and biting me now and then. Now I'm more annoyed at the NEW bugs that have
been
thrown in as a bonus. I'm getting real tired of waiting for the 'inevitable'
fix. Has anyone
out there actually paid the outrageous 'support' price and gotten any idea
if Apple has any
timetable for FIXING this rapidly multiplying swarm of binary pests?

Obviously it is "at your own risk" but I used this hack the whole
time I had
an ibook without any problems.
Resolutions etc were all selectable independently from the monitors control
panel and it worked exactly like my powerbook does now.
This was a g3 not a g4 though.
Steve parker.
Hi Howard,
That never occurred to me. I'll have to give that a try sometime. Although,
on my system, it is a pain to mix down from a midi track to an audio track.
I have to hook up a patch cord and make sure I don't setup a feedback loop
in the process. It might be worth it for one or two important instruments.
Like you say, to give it that extra punch.
Thanks,
Kamm

60%?
The iBook in question was the 14" combo for $1299 US. The 12"
PowerBook
combo is $1599 US. $300 difference; less than 25% for dual monitor,
faster system bus, audio line in and more video memory. Not to mention
a better feeling keyboard IMHO.
Take care

Actually, I installed it, used EXSManager to resolve the file locations,
opened an EXS instance, loaded the piano, waited almost five minutes for it
to load, and it appeared. The problem was one side of the stereo image was
piano and the other was white noise. This usually gets resolved when you
change the file type, e.g. .wav to SDII, but that's a big bulk process I'm
not looking forward to. I will email Michiel Post and let him know we're
having problems and see if he can't help.

I see what you're talking about, but I tried all three selections (Overlap,
no overlap, x-fade) and I couldn't see that it made any difference no matter
which I chose. I'll have to dive into the manual to see what it is supposed
to do and how to use it.

Very unsupported being the operative phrase. There has also been
mention of the hack damaging the iBook. I also don't know if the hack
works with the latest and greatest iBooks. All in all though, would the
supposed "professionals" of this list really want to mess around
with /
risk such a thing to save a few hundred dollars? The time you lose in
work for the trouble would pay for the PowerBook.

Well, that's encouraging actually. If it used to work, they may bring that
functionality back. It certainly seems to me that bringing the clip to the
front is what *should* happen. That is actually what I expected.

As a Sonar user I can definitely say that Sonar has far fewer bugs than
Logic. However, I still find myself drawn to Logic. I can't quite place my
finger on why yet, but I do enjoy Logic. Both programs are extremely
powerful. And I don't use the word "extremely" lightly.
This list has been very helpful in getting me past the few stumbling blocks
I've encountered so far. Thanks to all of you!

No need to do this, it´s broken in L7. :-(((

This is actually a very powerful feature, esp. considering that you can
set your "option tool" independently for every editor window in
Logic.
BTW the "arrow with the squiggly line" is the automation tool. How
are
you curving your automation without it?

Hi,
Using G5, L7 with RME Fireface, 2 UAD, Powercore, Mackie Control, etc..
I was hoping for some changes in v7.... but still miss many things.....
and that is not!! more fancy plugins ;)
Why on earth is it not possible to make a PUNCH in/out like on a
tapemachine? Never got record toggle to work properly...... Especially
when using Mackie/LOGIC Control this is really strange to me.
Did some dubbing on a live session today (no midi, click etc)
When using preroll... bars or seconds. You DONT HEAR whats happening
on the track before the punch in (pretty relevant).
I found a work around... set left/right locator and enable drop....
thats gives a lot! more mousework and more stress on your mouse
arm.... you know how it is after a 14 hour session..
"Punch in on the second phrase" .. shift-enter, click drag, click
drag..., zoom in, click drag, click drag, zoom out, click, click etc...
Well, sorry for the rant and if these are old topics... I have used
Logic for 8 years (and been here..) PT and now L7...
I might need to find other ways to get "things" done.... but is
hoping
Apple would steal some more basic ways of work from PT... they did
pretty good with the automation (but could REALLY improve more... like
the grouping in...)
How do you fellows handle dubbing (and 3+ tracks at a time...)?
Best,
Pelle
Hi all,
I posted this on the EXS users group so to those of you on both
groups....sorry for the
duplication.
I'm working on an orchestral piece. 28 exs instances so far. I'm in about 3
minutes into
the piece and my song file has become haunted. When I open it I get a
message that tells
me the song is damaged. It offers me 2 options repair and encapsulate.
Either of these
choices produces a dialog that says minor problem in data (3)..... repair or
exit. Hit repair
and the song opens.... things seem fine.... but they are not.
Note lengths in several sequences are extended to be maybe a hundred
measures in
length....fix them...they come right back....or I can get another dialog
that tells me there is
another minor problem in data (3).....repair or cancel. DON'T HIT
CANCEL.....the sequence
goes away. It becomes an empty sequence called trash. Hit repair and logic
thinks for a
minute and does seemingly nothing. One of my EXS instances keeps loosing
it's samples.
There have been other problems I copied a sequence from one track to another
and was
told that I had done some kind of circular something or other and to contact
Emagic and
tell them how. Notes in a sequence can just show up at a different pitch
Anyway....the song is full of goblins. I need this song.... Is there someway
to salvage this
thing? All help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
julie
Hello
No matter what channel I set the track that the EVD6 is plugged into,
it accepts note messages from any MIDI channel. For instance, If the
channel is set to 4, it will recieve note messages transmitted on 1,
2, 3, & of course 4. I must be missing something, but I don't know
what. I do not have this problem with other instruments and plug-ins,
such as for instance EVB3.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Regards,
Doug
