This type of OS behavior is indefensible, doesn't matter the OS or the
platform.
User/Program generated files should never be written over.
Are you sure there isn't an option hidden away that allows a permanent swap
file of a defined size?

Well, looks like you've got a nice system, much better than mine,
spec-wise....
Don't know what to tell you... I have had NONE of the problems that you
mentioned.
There are SOOO many factors to all of these issues that people report.....
For instance, does one have "cracked" software on their system?
How much have they
used the Internet with it? What have they downloaded? How many programs do
you
have in your Applications folder, and what kinds? By who were they made???
What
plug-ins do you have running from third-parties? Again, are they
"cracked" or REAL,
supported versions.....?
Do you regularly "repair disk permissions" and "repair the
hard drive" with the Disk
Utility (booted from the OS X CD-ROM)???
etc. etc. etc.... the list of possible factors goes on and on....
The ONLY problems that I have had with Logic 6.3.3 under Panther 10.3.2 are
GRAPHICAL in nature, and some strange "oddities" that pop-up every
once in a while,
but nothing major, that I can see so far....
Sorry that this was really of no help.....
I WOULD like to get some responses on my initial post about usuing an
external
monitor on the PowerBook G4, and using Logic... etc... Please refer to my
original
post, (all that might know about this issue and have experience in doing
it)!!!

Well the the suhject says that doesn't it ;-)..or maybe "upgrade"
and
"update" just get mixed here,,,but yes you can
order the 199 dollar update from Apple Store..that is if you happen to
live in USA..the rest of the world will have to wait...

I was at the Apple Store in Detroit last week and asked the guys if they
would be
carrying the Logic Line (Logic Pro Express and Logic Pro 6) and they said
that they
hadn't been told yet.
Given the attention that Apple has been giving this launch and given that it
is a mulit-
tiered product line (Garageband, Pro Express and Pro 6) it would only make
sense that
they would have it available in the stores.

The logic help refers to it as "the preferences file". Anyone know
the name of
the logic preference file that contains custom key commands?

I think he means the physical apple stores not apple.com. Btw I just ordered
the plat/gold 5/6 upgrade to pro 6 and it says expect to ship on 2/24

It's this one:
info.emagic.Logic.plist
(Always drag the current one out onto your Desktop (or somewhere) just in
case you
need it back for some reason, or just rename it in its place with
"info.emagic.Logic.plist.bak" or something)

Works OK here, Ti 1Ghz, 1GB RAM, OS X 10.3.1, Logic 6.3.2.
Redraw on the second screen (19" at 1280x960) is a little slower than
on the LCD. Using the external screen consumes more power at the video
card, so the fan is on more often.

Yes, if you wanted to automate the 01V from the 01V (or from another
controller), which seems a little pointless. Or perhaps if you wanted
a custom environment with faders matching the 01V's to be recorded to
track automation. To simply draw in track automation for CCs and send
it to the 01V you wouldn't need the example anyway.

Correct. The example isn't for controlling the internal audio mixer
(it's for midi tracks); doesn't do anything about converting control
moves or automation (Fader events) on the internal audio mixer to CCs
and sending them back to outboard gear; or about managing different
"banks" or "presets" of control mappings, extracting
current values
and providing feedback to the appropriate 01V faders when you switch
those - volume vs pan, or tracks 1-24 vs tracks 25-48, etc. It's a way
trickier problem than it first sounds, especially if you want it to
work with track automation.

Hello,
Any advice on the most efficient methods to convert DP projects to
Logic projects?
It seems to require at the very least two far-from-seamless steps:
1. Conversion of the MIDI data as a Standard MIDI File
2. Conversion of the audio data as an OMF File
Thank you for any advice.
Best,

Sorry to have been unclear.
I was actually asking whether the update would be available in the
"real-world" Apple Stores like the SoHo store here in New York.
I'm just trying to estimate the fastest way to get one's hands on a
copy, whether to order on-line and have it shipped at an unknown time
or wait until the local Apple Store stocks the upgrade.

now all we need to know is what the 'competitive upgrade' is going to cost

I would expect that Apple will sell the full version there, but not
sure about the upgrade for existing XSKey owners. I just called Apple
and asked, and the sales rep there didn't know.

Thanks John!
So, you think that running Logic 6 with an external 17" Apple monitor
(or something similar) coming from a PowerBook G4, 800 Mhz, 512 MB RAM is
feasible,
i.e. realistic and stable???
If I only have to be concerned with slightly slower redraws ON THE SECOND
SCREEN, and the fan coming on more often, that really doesn't bother me,
honestly... As long as I get some more screen space!!!!
Your final thoughts? (And anyone else...???)
Thanks again John!

I'm a DP user too. According to my Sweetwater rep, there will be no
competitive upgrade to Logic Pro. I plan on purchasing, but I'm waiting to
see if this is true. Anyone else think this is bogus?

I have heard that you need to make sure your DP projects have the audio
files saved as SDII in order for them to correctly line up in logic..

I don't know whether its bogus or not. But you might consider making the
competitive upgrade right now. You can go to your local music software
dealer that sells emagic products..and they do it there. It cost me about
US$400 to do a competitive uprade to Logic. Then it will cost me another
$199 to upgrade to Pro. So you're looking at $600-$650 range to make the
switch from DP to Logic Pro....
Its not a cheap switch... But that is probably the wave of the future and
its still less than buying it outright for $999.

Sure. I've been running a second monitor on various powerbooks since
1998. My current setup has been in daily use for graphic design since
2001, with a PBG4/500 then PBG4/1GHz and Panasonic 19" CRT monitor.
Works fine in OS 9 and OS X. I've been hot-plugging the external
monitor with no issues - OS X reconfigures on the fly.
The Apple LCD monitors require an optional DVI-to-ADC converter to
hook up. Unless you specifically want an Apple monitor, I'd go for a
generic LCD with a VGA or DVI (better) input.
If you're using OS X, get more RAM. Not for the dual screens, just
because OS X really likes RAM.

Orren,
Not to hijack your thread, but I've been enjoying your latest book very
much. A friend of mine - a recent convert to Logic from SX - wants to
get a copy, but get this - HE DOESN'T HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION!! So
he's trying to find it at a local Canadian bookseller, like Indigo
perhaps.

Every word I've heard about the Logic Pro update has said March would
be the soonest it would be available.
Is this Logic Pro Upgrade available now at the Apple stores? Can we
get a definitive yes?

Hi,
ELFA has the Logic pro Upgrade (Gold 6->Platinum plus plugins)
advertised for AUD525, which is in all honesty a great deal considering
that my previous upgrades all cost about the same.
Imagine my surprise when I contacted my local music shop (well the one I
use),
to find hat will sell me the package for AUD475, which really makes my day.
Thanks to anyone commenting about Edirol MIDI interfaces - I still do not
have concrete information about the quality of the 8x8 interfaces
and their usage with Logic and Sounddiver however.
I have a need for 2 8x8 multiport MIDI interfaces that do extensive
routing and filtering of MIDI data. I want to do all the data
thinning at the interface since Logic has no clock filter and the
MID filtering is hopeless in software for my hardware purposes.
I also want to be assured that Sounddiver
will work - my current interfaces do not work properly with SD at all
(I know it is another forum, but MIDI is MIDI).
Someone *please* recommend to me a multiport 8x8 interface that is:
Multiport
cheap
works with SD & Logic 100%
cheap
has routing and filtering
cheap
The Edirol UM-880 seems to have the lot covered, but I cannot find one
person
who is actually using one in anger with Logic & SD.

Steve,
I'm transfering my DP Projects to Logic Platinum 6.3.3 succesfully.
Here's my steps below:
First make a copy of the desired song with its audio copied also.
1. Save DP song as a Standard Midi File Format 1
2. Select all audio tracks, go to the "Windows" menu and
select "Soundbites"
3. Go to the Soundbites submenu and "Select Unused Soundbites"
4. Hold down the "Option" key and from the Soundbites menu,
select "Delete" to delete "Unused Soundbites"
5. Go to the "Audio" menu and select "Timestamps >
"User Selected
Timestamps"
6. Last step is File>Save As> OMF Exchange (and here select your
desired file prefereneces
7. Open Logic>Open your DP standard midi file> it will ask you
to "import the SMPTE" info>choose yes>Import OMF file
All of your midi and audio will be lined up as it was in DP.

John - forgive me for being naive, are the programs you suggested capable of
letting me use the 01V to control the audio mixer in Logic? And if so, am I
right in saying that they WONT give feedback to the desk, but DO have soft
takeover?
Thanks

Ok, for sake of fairness....Competetive upgrade retails for $499. So $698
is retail price to cross grade to Logic Pro if you do what I did. However,
my retailer took $50 off the crossgrade price without any effort at all( I
didn't even have to ask for it..he just did)..I suppose I could have shopped
around and got for even less with a a little more effort. I've heard of
others paying less. Undoubtedly...to buy the full product it would be the
same...might be able to take up to 10% off the retail price somewhere.
That being said...the street price is probably either $600-$650 to
crossgrade/upgrade in two steps...or maybe about $900 to buy it full later.
Or perhaps Apple will come through with a cross grade price...but I can't
imagine it being much less than $650. More than likely, I'd bet it would
retail for $699, if at all, and you'd get it for $650 on the street. That's
-IF- they even offer it.
The main point is this.. If you wait..you might not even have the option to
crossgrade. But what it would cost now to do what I did...is about what it
would probably be if they were to offer a crossgrade later...so if you're
ready to plunge..I'd say you're better off doing what I did...get the
crossgrade ASAP...and then upgrade to Pro as soon as you're ready in a few
months.
