Hey List...
I am still having really strange problems with my MIDI configuration on LAM
Plat 6.1 OS X.
I can play one keyboard (XP-80) in performance mode on any MIDI channel, but
when I hit the keys on another keyboard (O1W/FD), the O1W has notes that
stick and the XP-80 gets silenced until I let go of the O1W's keys, but the
notes are still stuck. My system is fairly unusable right now.
I wanted to know if anyone else has run into this mess. I use a MOTU
Timepiece AV for interface w/ USB connection.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi guys,
one more anomaly is the following:
I like to have a folder inside which all the automation data for a
specific track is visible (so I might have 10 versions of 1 track to
see all the data that is being automated.
If this folder doesn't start on bar 1 of the song dragging automation
points becomes a real nuisance, since the line that shows the
position of the automation point is moved ahead by a couple of bars.
Easy workaround is to have the automation folders start on bar one
(even though my songs always start on bar 5)
Cheers
Hans
I agree that Emagic should make a demo available on their website, but I
have to take issue with a couple of things here.
First of all--sure, Logic Audio Platinum is spendy but Micro Logic AV (a
"lite" version of Logic Audio) can be had new for $79 bucks
(http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCodeG93&Category=Software).
MOTU doesn't have anything close to that price, that I'm aware of. I think
you can find a demo of ML online.
Secondly, I don't think I've ever needed to crack the manual--the online
help is pretty decent and if that doesn't work, you can get fast answers
from users on this list and elsewhere. Beyond that, though, what I really
dig about Logic is that (for me) it's way intuitive, and you can customize
the program to work the way you want to work. Honestly, it's got to be one
of the most flexible apps out there--what with screen sets, customizable key
commands, built-in programmable MIDI "tools", etc. Plus, these
guys are on
the bleeding edge of music technology--quite frequently implimenting
features and supporting hardware way before other companies do. I have
bought a crapload of software (BIAS Peak anyone?) that routinely irks me on
one level or another, but Logic always comes through for me. Best purchase
I ever made.

A while ago there was a thread on this. A way to utilize the first
"audio"
level meter in the System Performance window under the Audio menu (the other
processor on a dual G4). The second meter peaks out and the first meter
doesn't even register. (G4 867 Dual, 768 MB Ram, Logic Platinum 5.5.0, OS
9.2)
If you know the trick or have a copy of thread please forward to me.
TIA

Having a large cluster size is good for your audio drive/partition because
it reduces the system overheads involved in file handling. For example if
you are playing back a lot of samples or audio tracks, handling them in
larger chunks makes the operations a little faster. It also speeds
defragmentation dramatically. The only downside is wasted space on the disk
- small files and the last section of large files may leave big clusters
barely used.
For your system drive, which will have many small files, saving space
with a small cluster size makes sense and the performanace penalties are
probably negligible.

Hi,
I'm having a bit of a dilemma - need to get some decent FX for use in Logic
(PlatinumVerb sucks ass), was looking at either Waves Native PowerPack,
Rennaissance Maxx pack or TC Native. Can anyone make a recommendation? I
used to use PowerCore on my old desktop, do any of these host based VST's
approach this quality?
Cheers,
Nick
Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen, it is very helpful and encouraging.
There seems to be consensus that the transition to Logic would be smooth
for me, except for the problem with the 2408's. Which might be a show
stopper, they are a big part of my studio flow - I lightpipe 24 channels
of GigaStudio sampler output into them, plus another 8 channels from a
third computer. Soon to be a fourth computer spewing forth lightpiped
audio, another PC.
Is there any news from MOTU about providing updated and bug-free drivers
for the 2408's?
Also, I'm checking out prices for Logic. Bewildering possibilities,
including the Big Box that contains the sampler. I could not find,
though, an upgrade path from the version of Logic in the Big Box to the
LAP 6. Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Trond

There is something wierd with the list - I am getting individuals despite my
preferences - even continued when i unsubscribed for a while. Maybe I'm
getting
yours? :-)

Did you guys play with matches as kids? Midphase's response misses one
very important point. A number of years ago I worked for a well known
speaker manufacturer (both pro and consumer) and blown tweeters was our
biggest nemesis. It's amazing how many people will have a party, they'll
turn up the music to just below the point of distortion. What they don't
realize is that at that point they're still getting some distortion on
transients. By the end of the party the speaker sounds really muffled.
Then they try to blame the manufacturer for shoddy merchandise.
The fact is that square wave is going to send a lot of harmonics to the
tweeter, more than it's designed to handle over the long term. The
woofer will do fine, but be careful about monitoring levels and it may
be wise to filter it a bit. Have fun.

just call emagic - the upgrade to logic platinum from big box costs 500 usd.
you'll definitely need platinum for 32 working channels of digital i/o.

Thank you for your insight. This is exactly the information I was looking
for.
Which brings me to a different question related to this:
I've been using the inspector from Elemental Audio Systems to analyze
my mix and I must say I like it a lot. But I wish there was a plug-in
out there that analyzes the phases (I remember those green displays
in analog studios that were jumping all over the place but should
stay as diagonal as possible, if I remember correctly) of my mix and
also a plug-in that shows the wave form that's going out with a
freeze and a zoom function *wink, wink to the developers out there*...
If such a thing already exists please let me know.
Thanks and cheers

Hello everyone,
I am getting into Logic Control a lot lately.
I am trying to learn every possible detail and getting surprised at the
process.
OK. My question or should i say complaint.
When I press EQ button on LC and keep pressing it down, I have these options
on the screen like...
Freq Gain Q Bypass CStrip FR/GnM Fr/GnC
So if you press down EQ and choose Fr/GnC (by pressing the corresponding
VPot) faders become the gain control of the EQBand and vPots become the
Frequency while mute buttons turn into on/off buttons for freq bands.
Very nice so far. However, If you open your EQ window to see the changes,
choosing this option closes the window. I mean, you have to open the window
using plugin button and the channels VPot to begin with.
In short, I think EQ window should open when you choose this option
(Fr/GnC). Not CLOSE!!!
The only way you can have the EQ window open while doing this is to
dbl-click it with mouse which defeats the whole purpose of having LC and
then it stays open. You have to close it with mouse again.
If EQ window opened when we chose this option and closed when we got out of
Fr/GnC it would be wonderful and not effect the work flow.
Just a suggestion.

I have just had my first book published and I am trying to find as many
music technology/industry magazines as possible, who do book reviews. I've
already sent some copies to UK magazines (Sound On Sound, Future Music,
etc.) but I was hoping that anyone here who has a magazine could have a
quick look to see if they do book reviews - and if so, email me the name of
the editor and the address for the magazine so that I can send them a copy.
The book is called "How To Get Your Music in Film & TV" by the
way, and is
on Amazon.
Probably best if you email me directly at lists@...

Hello Everyone,
I use Logic 6.1 on OSX platform, When I don't write music, I tend to
record my Dj
sets(very big audio file to handle) in Logic now, even though before
i used to record
them into the free protools(but now in no longer avaiable), where you
could generate
regions and export them into a single audio file that "Toast"
would
recognize as
separate regions...
So my question is if i can do something like this in Logic, so I can
afterwards burn my
set and skip into different tracks instead of having a BIG audio file
that i cannot
touch...
Someone told me that it might not be possible to do that in Logic, so
can somebody
tell me if there's another application on OSX in wich I can do only
that???(Like the old
Waveburner)
Thanx

Hi gang,
I am getting the weirdest behavior in the project manager.
My file structure is such. I have 3 physical drives.
One holds my OS and logic. It's divided into 3 partitions: 10gig for
os 9.22, 10gig for os 10.2.6 and 35gig for storage.
The other two are 120gig drives, one holding my vocals, and the other
stores my samples. (exs, stylus, sampletank, etc.)
So last night I decided that I was going to do some maintenance and
file management, since i have a best friend who has no idea what a
file structure is.... (put the vocals on the vocal drive inside a
dedicated folder please!)
Anyway as I was scanning my EXSamples directory (absolutely huge,
mostly giga and soundfont samples) and PM froze. So I rebooted the
computer and tried again. So i noticed that it was happening in the
same vicinity of the file structure. So I began to do some folder
scans. To make a long story short, there is a particular folder
within my EXSamples folder that has about 600 some-odd folders within
it. (it's called Old Soundfonts). When I scanned that folder, PM
crashed upon reaching a folder called "ELECTRONIC DRUMS" (caps
intentional). So, being the inquisitive jackoff I am :) I removed the
folder to another physical drive and tried again (after rebooting).
And whaddya know, It crashed again, but this time upon reaching the
next heirarchichal subfolder, which is, appropriately
enough, "Electronic Drumset". So I removed this folder and... well
you get the point. All told, I applied this process four times with
identical results, and every time PM crashed on the next folder.
I am at a total loss. Also, in the past, when I tried to scan the
Sampler Instruments folder, PM would crash midway through the drums
subfolder. But I never really took notice, I just worked around it,
but I thought I would mention it.
As I am pretty confident that PM is not biased against the TR808 and
909 (and 606 and CR78......) I am totally mistified by this
occurence. And I know its not the number of folders within the
directory because I have other directories with more subfolders and
samples, (one called Soundfonts and the other, Giga) that scan just
fine.
Anyhow, this is a big mess since I am always rearranging my file
structure (at least once per quarter) and exs is always looking for
files.
Any ideas?

(BTW The 3 drives are connected to the internal busses on the
motherboard. I had a SIIG RAID card (ATA/133) but it was causing
clicks and distortion with my Delta66. The system drive is slaved to
the burner. The vocal drive is slaved to the sample drive)
Hi,
Getting some more big errors now after fixing the OS clone (i gave up and
reinstalled Win XP instead) now ive formatted my 185.2gb deskstar drive for
Logic, although it only shows in as 172gb max (thats over 13gb missing?)
Anyway, using partition manager, in dos I formatted the drive to a 64k
cluster size, Windows XP format NTFS, primary partition, did lots of disk
checks all seemed well, until i started copying audio files across, almost
stright away a big blue screen reading...
"Pagefaul in wrong area" (or something along those lines) it said
the
problem was due to the file "NTFS.sys"
Does anyone have any ideas whats up? Ive tried going back and using 32k
clusters, reformatting in the default NTFS system incase it was that, even
turned off S.M.A.R.T for my hard drives in the bios incase that was causing
the problem...but is still happening everytime. It can't be the harddrive
because i just copied 50gb of data to it in the first place to back up, and
35gb back off it again...its something to do with WinXP and NTFS...
5 days of downtime now just because i decided to upgrade one of my
hard-drives....:(

Version 2.4 of the free soft synth (VST and AU) Crystal is here.
The details are on the download page at
http://www.greenoak.com/crystal
but a summary of what's new is below.
Feedback is always appreciated, and to get the most out of Crystal, be
sure to join the discussion group at yahoo
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crystal-users/join
20 Megabyte sample ROM
------
You may now download and install 20 Mb of multisampled instruments for
Crystal, thus making Crystal a full-featured rompler. The download
page also has a bank of patches to demonstrate these new samples.
Soundfont management enhancements
------
Version 2.4 provides hierarchical organization of your soundfonts. If
you put the soundfont files in a tree of folders, that tree will be
reflected in Crystal's oscillator type menu as submenus. Use this
feature to organize your soundfonts into categories which are easy to
navigate from within Crystal.
Patch export
------
Crystal 2.4 offers the ability to write patches to a .fxb file from
within Crystal. This is handy for Logic users who otherwise would
have no way to update their patch banks files.
Enhanced Audio Unit host compatibility
------
The Audio Unit version of Crystal fixes compatibility problems with
Metro, Rax, and Digital Performer.
Try SparkME, the free Spark version from TCelectronic.
Logic has a limited amount of recording time, I couldn't record more
than 64 minutes, so it's not recommended to record dj-sets
With Spark you can edit regions and burn them as different tracks.

Hi Nick,
The Powercore is now working for Logic in OSX. I thought the Classic
Verb was supposed to be pretty good. And the Multiband Compressor is
top notch..

> Hi all,
... don't know if this has been posted before... but I've found it's
possible to control what audio tracks/plugins run on which processor in Dual
Processor Macs running Logic.
Any audio channel track or VSTi track that has the I/O helper plugin setup
on it will run on the processor which currently is mostly unused. This means
you can get some extra work out of the processor which formerly only ran OS
and MIDI/screen redraws etc.
To do this , just do the following:
1. Insert the I/O helper plugin on any audio channel or better yet a VSTi
channel
2. Set the Output in that plugin to be any available output (don't leave it
at "--" which is the default - you won't get the benefit if you
don't pick
an available output.)
3. Option-Click the insert to disable it...
4. Voila...! any plugins on that channel (including the VSTi) will now use
the much less heavily loaded processor.
Try this one and all... and see if there are any downsides... or cases where
it doesn't work... but it appears to give you a simple way to control what
is running on which processor... and when you're running tight on CPU...
you'll have quite a bit of usable power to spare which you can now grab...
sure beats bouncing tracks to add another plugin or VSTi to the mix, eh?
Let me know if anyone has any problems with this approach... it's working
beautifully for me... and avoids the "record-enable" trick which
was posted
here a week or so ago and was a little tough to use on bouncing...
What is considered the best and reasonably priced gear set-up to capture
analog/digital video for movie soundtrack work ( capture cards vs DV
camera for Firewire transfer etc ) I have G4 533 850mb RAM Platinum 6
Would you recommend dedicated HD for video?
Many thanks,
Paul.
Just for fun, I decided to see if I could figure out how to create an Apple
Quicktime synth template song. It's actually pretty easy--go into the
environment window of your song (command-8 on your mac keyboard is the
"hot
key"), go to (or make) the MIDI layer (you get there by click-holding
on the
"page selector" on the left side of the window) and create the
following
objects from the upper-left "New" menu:
Multi Instrument, and...
Apple Quicktime from the "Internal" sub-menu found in the
"New" menu.
Now, grab the "cable" handle on the Multi Instrument object and
drag n' drop
it on the Apple Quicktime object, thereby connecting the two. Basically
you've created a virtual multi-channel synth that controls the internal
Quicktime synth!
Click on each of the 16 channels on the Multi Instrument object to get rid
of the line going thru each channel--this "enables" all 16 GM
channels.
Go back to the Arrange window (the main workspace) and click-and-hold on the
"name" of the object on track 1 ("VST 01", "AUDIO
1", or whatever it is) and
select MIDI/(Multi Inst.)/1 (piano - or whatever program change happens to
be on channel 1)...
You will notice that on the left of the Arrange page, you can
"check"
(enable) the "Prg" box, which lets you select a GM patch (0 -
127). If
you're playing back a MIDI file, you probably want your channels unchecked,
I imagine.
Highlight your first track (channel 1) and hit
"control-shift-return" on the
mac keyboard. This automatically creates the next track with channel 2 of
your Quicktime GM synth! Repeat until all channels (16) are visible.
There you go!
