Hi there,
This is a question for those knowledgeable sound engineer people amongst
you:
I'm experimenting with feedbacks right now (recording the feedback
I'm getting when routing output 1-2 through my mixer and back into
the 2408). Of course I have the speakers off for that purpose as I
don't like my ears to get damaged.
Now, the file that I get obviously has clippings. If I'm not mistaken
then the speaker moves back and forth to produce sound, but what
happens to these continuos samples that just stay the same value.
Does that hurt the speaker?
Cheers
Hans

You can upgrade from any Logic to any other Logic as long as you have
the EXKey. Each version of the application as far back as I can
remember was a separate file, and installers simply added a new
application file to the folder rather than altering code within the
app.

Hi Hans,
as far as my experience goes, in the real world we used to have
(to my knowledge) two types of solo: just plain bold solo and
solo-in-place, which was kind of a luxury. The first one bypasses
all sends and eq's on the desk and gives back just that single
solo'ed signal.
The second one, and afaik Logic works like that, gives back the
solo'ed signal with the sends still open, the eq's on. This means
that any signal being routed pre-fader to a bus will still do so, so
you'll hear some delay or reverb or anything inserted on that
specific bus coming back.
As far as I can tell, no bug.

O.

This is a bit late in coming, but in case anyone else out there in
mailinglist land is
interested in a Logic demo...
I just picked up a copy of Apple's "Logic 6, Professional Music
Creation and Audio
Production" It's part of the Apple Pro Training Series by Peachpit
Press. I haven't read
any of the book yet, but on the cover it states:
"CD-ROM included, Logic Platinum 6 license included (30-day
version)"
If thirty days are enough for you to evaluate it, spending $44.99 on the
book is a darn
sight better than $799.00 for a program you might not use. You won't get the
(crapy)
Logic manual, but you will get a book designed to make you
"certifiable" in Logic.
And I assume the online help will still be there, and it was always better
than the
manual anyway.
Anyways, thought you (all) would like to know.
Cheers,

Hi List,
Just installed OSX last night and this morning Im having a problem with
iTuenes.
The "open-apple E" command to eject the disk wont work.
I've also discovered that pushing the "eject" button on the main
iTunes
window does not work also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please respond off the list.
Thanks,

You can close the lid and use only the external screen, or you can
mirror the powerbook screen onto the external, or you can use both
screens independently for a seriously larger working space.
The Ti500 only has an 8MB video card, so if you do use both screens,
resolutions over 1152x870 on the external screen must be in thousands
of colours, not millions.

Yeah, when I've had slashed-out plugs, selecting core audio from the drivers
window
has corrected the problem.

Hi guys,
I've very definitely noticed some dodgy behaviour with the
automation system tonight, which has caused me a few headaches.
For instance, I have the track automation settings to always move
automation with objects. In my current song, on *some* tracks, I
drag an object and the automation data goes with it fine.
On some other tracks within the same song, I can drag an object
and the automation doesn't move at all, which definitely
shouldn't happen.
On investigating this, I discovered one gotcha you may have to
look out for :- when moving/dragging an object, only the
automation data *within* the object boundaries will move with the
object - this is relatively obvious if you think about it, but
one major good thing with the TBA is that you can ramp up the
volume (or whatever) before and after an object without having to
extend the object or create dummy objects before and after like
you had to with the object-based automation in previous Logic
versions. So if you're not careful and have these ramps outside
the object boundaries, moving an object *will* mess up your
automation data. (Using insert time and move by locators will
move everything, so the automation data will be handled correctly
in this case.)
And worse of all, on some tracks, I move an object and the
automation data moves, BUT MOVES TO THE WRONG PLACE. This happens
every time I select all objects and move them say 4 bars - the
sequence/audio objects move four bars, but the automation moves
about 6 bars!!
I couldn't understand why inserting a few empty bars and moving
stuff was starting to mess up my automation data.
Be warned if you ever get strange automation anomalies, and check
that the automation data is being handled correctly.
Well the multi-undo comes in handy, anyway!!

Large cluster sizes are more efficient when using long contiguous files,
such as audio files, less work for the audio drive.
Small cluster sizes make better use of disk space when using smaller files,
such as your system drive, Windows OS....etc.
I use 8K cluster size on the system drive and 32K clusters on the audio
drives.
I would be careful trying to change cluster size on a drive with data.
Format commands for a D; drive at 32K Format D: /Z:64
If no Z command is used format always uses 4K clusters.
I think your WinXP cloning problem is "drive geometry" related.
See here:

Run a search in Google using WinXP Ghost Boot Problem
Maybe include the .dll you listed earlier.
Might want to take this off list.

May be it is/was another keyboard language selected ? I have 2 languages
installed as I am not native-english..
Ray.
I'm new to both the Mac Platform and Logic 6 and I'm confused about
a few things.
I have a powerbook "17 G4.
When I just click on a midi file in the finder, it plays and I hear
everything - drums, strings, piano etc
When I open the same midi file inside Logic, I can't seem to find a
way to use the same driver that the quicktime midi player uses.
Is there a way to connect to it from Logic.
BTW, there are no external midi devices connected. That's why I want
to use the internal midi stuff
Thanks

FWIW, my current WinXP system seemed to be rock-solid until I
installed Control, and then it became crashy. It was even crashy when
the Control wasn't physically plugged in. I deleted Control's icon
from that "control surfaces" window, and now its stable again.
So I figure that (on WinXP), the MIDI-stream-sharing stuff that lets
Control read and write to midi buffers shared with the main app might
be buggy. Some of my crashes seemed to be related to GUI activity
that probably generates MIDI or automation info.
The crashes "felt" kinda similar to the sort of crashes that I
used
to get under XP with SoundDiver, which was again, probably to do with
logic's own special system for sharing MIDI buffers (my copy of
SoundDiver is now not allowed anywhere near my PC!).
With SoundDiver, I think you were supposed to be able to alleviate
the problem somewhat by increasing the size of the Windows MIDI
buffers, but I don't know how you do that for just Control.
> And way too many hanging notes

<perks> Which Roland keyboard is it?
I know with the battery-powered Roland PC-series, the things have a
habit of starting to send corrupted MIDI data when the battery runs
low, some time /before/ the unit's battery warning indicator starts
flashing.
And that corrupted data can crash Logic ...
Maybe Logic's MIDI handling is optimised more for speed than for
crash-proofedness? ... dunno if there's any magical way to boost
stability at the expense of some reaction time.

Why can't there be an option where screensets are universal. Its a hassle
every time I change a screenset, first to transfer it to the autoload file,
then
when to every other song. When I open an older song, the first thing I do is
import the screensets. Isn't it much more logical to have a way of working
on
all your music, rather than individual screensets for each and every song?

Since Emagic rarely seems to make Logic easy to use, nor to share the
documentation easily (I have manuals for v2 and v4 and little update
brochures - and
I did a search for CATCH in the infoweb last night and got nothing useful -
what the heck does that word mean anyway?), its part of the strategy - you
buy
it for big bucks and are stuck with it so you have no choice but to spend
the
agonizing months coming up to speed. So demos are not in their interest -
they
might scare buyers away.

Good question. The answer is yes and no. Since clipping is essentially
sending the speaker a square wave which is forcing the cone to go to
extremes in very short periods, a case could be made for this damaging the
speaker. The key to keeping things under control is to make sure you're
monitoring at relatively low volumes that your amp and speakers will be able
to handle. Keep volumes low and you should be allright.

For large files like audio files, bigger cluster sizes mean less disk i/o,
and faster performance. If you are using a lot of small samples a smaller
cluster size means more efficient disk usage in terms of storage space. All
of the optimization tips i've read about XP reccommend a cluster size of 64k
for large audio files.
As far as conversion goes, you should move the data to another drive
temporarily or back it up to cd or whatever before you try to convert the
cluster size. I'm fairly certain the only way to change the cluster size is
to reformat which would destroy all your data. I could be wrong about the
conversion being destructive, but i would back up everything you wanted to
keep either way.

I'm on Logic Gold 5.5, OS9.2. I used to be able to name tracks and have the

Actually, Partition Magic can resize the clusters without reformatting or
removing the data---but I still second the recommendation to move the data
off first both for safety and speed reasons. PM makes changes much faster
on clean partitions.

Hello, all.
Below is the interesting post that I copied from mackie forum.
////////////////////////////////////////////
Beginning sometime in August, the Mackie Controller upgrades will
allow all Mackie Control (main unit or XT) or Logic Control (main
unit or XT) Hardware to use either the Mackie Control Protocol or the
Logic Control Protocol. The user will be able to switch back and
forth between modes by holding a key combination (select buttons on
channels 1 and 2) at boot up. This will essentially make them
function as identical units and both will be able to be used with a
DAW supporting either the Mackie Control Protocol (Nuendo, Cubase SX,
Sonar, DP, Cool Edit, etc.) or Logic Control Protocol (Logic). The
only remaining difference will be in the silk screening on the front
and back panels of the units and the different color of the plastic
used in the armrest and bezel.
Upgrades will be available for all existing Mackie Controls (main
units and XTs) and Logic Controls (main units and XTs). To upgrade a
unit, the user holds down the Record buttons on channels 1 and 2 and
the select button on channel 1 while turning on their unit. A message
will appear on the screen stating that the control surface is waiting
for a midi upgrade. The user will then playback the appropriate midi
file into their unit to perform the upgrade. If the user plays back
the wrong upgrade file, the upgrade will not occur.
Here are some further details about the different upgrade paths:
Existing version 1.x Mackie Controls and XTs will be upgradeable via
midi to version 1.02 and will support both the Mackie Control and the
Logic Control Protocols. This will be a free downloadable upgrade.
Existing version 1.x Logic Controls and XTs will be upgradeable via
midi to version 1.02 and will support both Mackie Control and Logic
Control Protocols. This will be a free downloadable upgrade.
Existing version 2.x Mackie Controls and XTs will be upgradeable via
midi to version 2.1.0 and will support Mackie Control, Logic Control,
and HUI Protocols. This will be a free downloadable upgrade.
Existing version 1.x Mackie Controls (main units and XTs) and Logic
Controls (main units and XTs) can be upgraded to the version 2.1.0
processor which will add HUI support (giving the user all three
control surfaces in one) by purchasing an upgrade processor from
Mackie for $99 + shipping. Please note: if you purchased a Mackie
Control on or after March 1, 2003 you are eligible for a FREE upgrade
kit. Go to the following link to see if you need to upgrade your unit:
http://www.mackie.com/support/hottopics/index.html#mc_need_upgrade
All new units will continue to ship from Mackie with the version 2.x
processor but they will now be loaded with the version 2.1.0
operating system and will support Mackie Control, Logic Control, and
HUI Protocols. The new units will also have new silk screening for
Mackie Control Universal with the Logic Control shortcuts.
New Mackie Control and Logic Control overlays will be available soon.
Mackie Parts Department will accept your order when the overlays
become available. They will be $10 per overlay plus a $10 shipping
and handling fee per order. Please call 1-800-258-6883 (1-425-487-
4337) and ask for the parts department to order overlays.

Before posting, I went to the 'old' Logic Test Site to look at
processors performance ect. It has not been updated for quite a while
so hence my questions.
1. What is the best motherboard/P4 and dram setup these days. The old
site goes up to the Northwood 2.53 P4.
I assume that now that windows Logic has ceased, the P4 optimisation
would only be written for the technology that was around at the time
Logic 5.5 was developed for windows.
2. I have been looking at a Creamware A16 converter interface plus a
Creamware Pulsar or Power Pulsar.
I note that most on this site use either Hammerfall or Motu
soundcards/interfaces. This mat be because most use a Mac?
Does anyone use the creamware products and if so any
favorable/unfavorable comments.... or others ..why your sound card is
so good ect?
I don't have a budget to consider, so I'm trying to get the best I
can ?
Thanks Greg
I am very happy with the motu equiptment as far as hardware I use a 2408
mkIII on both the pc setup and the mac, both work killer.
