I booted my brand-spankin-new DP 1.25GHz Mac last night, and
it sounds loud as heck to me. It's MUCH louder than my 8500,
and quite a bit louder than our Dell desktop. I can live with
it, but I'm disappointed. If this is the new quiet machine,
I truly pity the owners of the old louder machines. Anyway,
it's not great, but I guess as machines get faster and hotter,
it's to be expected...
On the plus side, OSX and the machine in general both ROCK!!!
I can't wait for Logic 6 to get delivered, I'm going to jump
fully into LogicX and take my lumps...

Yeah, but I wasn't sure if it was yahoo or something on my side,
having to do with this guy, or whatever. Anyway, thanks everyone for
confirming, both privately and here...

Agreed -- I wouldn't do that either. I guess if had a PC (now
there's a funny thought :-), I would simply stick to 5.5 and wait a
bit. Nothing wrong with 5.5, and nothing wrong with not spending
money for some time :).

I don't care for the arguments, but a new line of G-whatevers would be nice.

Very well -- thanks for asking. Just working my *ss off currently...
Spending 16 hours or more each day behind the Mac... (it's a one-week
schoolholiday over here, so no work until Monday -- hence the 16 hour
days). Another month or 2, and it'll hopefully be over. Heck, by
then I've been going to school for some 36 years -- time to get it
over and done with, and get a life :-).

Yes.......what you do is this - go to your key commands
menu, type in the "search" box "Automation Folder",
you'll
notice that there are no key commands assigned to this
menu, you'll also notice another automation Event List that
does not have any key command assigned to it. This is
because the only way to access these menus is by assigning
them key commands.(kind of a funky thing for Logic to have
to make you do, but oh well) I used key commands like
"Option, 1" and "Option, 2" for the other.(these
commands
are not used by any other Logic function) Once you've done
this, you can access these windows from the arrange and do
your pasting and copying as you like.........hope this
helps.

The current version of OSX is 10.2.4. I know that 10.2.3 introduced
some important under-the-hood improments related to audio so why not
just update your system? It's free...
fwiw there have been some reports of problems with 10.2.4 and MOTU828s.
I have had no problem with 10.2.4 and my MOTU896 however.

Why would Logic 6 be required to run it? AFAIK there are no major
changes between 5.5 and 6.0's AU implementation, are there?

mmm... the 01V96 sounds VERY interesting, especially
increased surface control and 24/96 ... any idea how many
pennies I need to start saving?
I appreciate knowing if I would significantly improve score print out
if I installed the optional Adobe Sonata font. Thanks.

Hmmm, sounds to me like somebody is having a nerd jam session! :)
The first thing you need to know is that the MMT8 does not output
MTC (MIDI Time Code), it only outputs CLOCKS. That means on each
laptop you'll want to set Logic to sync to external clocks, not MIDI
Time Code.
The thing that worries me is your "differing manufacturers" of USB
MIDI interfaces. In my experience a lot of manufacturers are yet to
get these things to be just right.
I think your best bet would be to first figure out just which
laptops are out and by how much. Don't rely on the BPM display on
the transport bar - it means essentially nothing when Logic is
synced to MIDI clocks, all it's doing is "guessing" the current
tempo based on incoming pulses. Sequence something on the MMT-8 and
something else on the laptop, and listen to determine whether they
drift from each other. Use external MIDI instruments for this test,
because the inherent latency of soft synths could mislead you here.
Once you have figured out which laptops are offending, start
swapping USB MIDI interfaces to see if the problems follow the
interfaces or the laptops.
BTW I don't recommend using OMS, but it might be necessary to get
Logic to talk to some USB interfaces I suppose. With a USB MIDI
interface I would be more inclined to use OS X (assuming drivers are
available) than OMS.
If you're smart and methodical about the way you do this, you should
be able to find the culprits in less than an hour.
Good luck!

just read an article in EM saying the litepipe in has problems-not with the
out though.
check out RME too

Find a closet and buy some extensions for your mouse, keys and monitor -
set your box up so you can boot from you keyboard and you are good to
go....you may have to open the closet to load cdroms, but it is worth it.

I know it works perfectly fine on 10.2.3. You can upgrade to
this for free.
I don't know about 10.2.2 (this hasn't been current for many
weeks now). 10.2.4 is actually the most current, but I definitely
know that 10.2.3 works fine.

the 01V96 will list for about $2500-. You can get more info at Yamaha's site
and there is an good press release avaiolable at Harmony Central.

BTW - One other thing I look forward to with the 01v96 is accessing the four
effects in realtime using Logic's insert I/O plug-in.

Here's the info I got from Glenn:
"With Logic 5 you can use the presets, but you
can't edit patches (the GUI controls won't work). EMagic will
be supplying a free 5.5.x update to fix this in the near future.

I'm happy to say that MOTU stuck w/ their stated release date of Feb 28. My
2408 Mk2 is working great in the very minimal testing I have so far done.
There are version 1.0 drivers for both 324 & 424 as promised :)

I have a four staff score of a string quartet. I am now working to
overlap certain notes to give it a more legato feeling on midi
playback. The sound is just what I want. The problem that I am having
is that Logic will only allow me to save these alterations in 3 of the
4 staffs (not the viola). I notice in the matrix window that as soon
as I hit save (apple S) the notes of the viola pop back to their
original
positions. Here is what I want:
--------| |-------
|--------| this
--------|- -|-------
-|--------|- becomes this
At the qua setting I have (16, 24) I am able to extend the notes just
1/32 in each direction without the score changing which is OK because
it gives me just the sound I am looking for.
Qua is set to 16, 24 which gives me score just like I want (shortest
note is a 16th).
Interpretation off
Syncopation ON
No overlap off
Max Dots 1
How do I get Logic to save this in all four staffs?
> > Is there a way to copy the automation data and paste it

I usually just create a new track, create an empty object where my
automation is and then copy that and answer "yes" to the copy
automation dialog box.
works well and fast..
Cheers

I am running a similar system and the only problem I had was audio
blips during recording and playback. Until I realized I had not
upgraded the firewire driver. I got the 10.2.4 updater from the
apple site and the problem is solved.
I think this is a rock solid system now too

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the pdfs on mixing or mastering
in general. I could only find faqs for their products. Do you have
a more specific link?
Try posting your questing to the Metric MIO group:

There are lots of discussions about lightpipe performance..
For what it is worth. I ordered 5 interfaces, including the MOTU 828,
returning them all.
I will keep the MIO, it is great and will only improve in time. Metric
Halo is addressing problems with the light pipe.

SAY WHAT?
How can you have a problem from 2 different machines that use the
same driver. My 828 works fine in 10.2.4
Hi,
Using LAW with a Delta 1010 card. When trying to target notes via
Midi for autotune, I try to select the Delta 1010 Midi, and it comes
up with Auto-Tune could not initialize Midi. Please make sure that
the MIDI device is properly installed and that appropriate multi-
client midi driveers have been installed.
I've used it succesfully before, though since I have hooked up my
Logic Control and XT via a Midi Sport USB midi 2x2.
Otherwise the midi ports work fine on the Delta 1010, I can record
and playback midi to my Korg Triton.

My experience is that disk performance can be pretty awful on OSX
compared to OS9, more so at low buffer sizes, and especially if using
Firewire disks. Too much buffering & too infrequent writing for my
1GHz Titanium internal drive at smaller buffer sizes, the same plus
high CPU use for external Firewire drives.
In terms of audio processing alone, I'm finding OSX has a small
overall performance hit (5% or so), but more optimized plugins in
Logic 6 should offset this nicely.
I'm also finding Logic 5.5 on OSX to be a little _less_ stable than
5.5 on OS9 with my RME multiface. But at least when it crashes it
doesn't hose the whole OS.
I'm hoping Logic 6 will improve things somewhat, though I suspect the
disk problems lie more with CoreAudio and OSX Firewire code. Any Logic
6 users care to comment on disk performance at low buffer sizes - 128
sample buffer, record/playback 16+ tracks?

I'm not sure what you say is true HJ. As far as I'm aware Emagic are legally
bound to fully support Logic 5 for Windows until Sept 30th 2004 and I
suspect this includes bug fixes. Apparently this is stipulated by German
law.
I'm there are others who know more than I on this matter.
