Actually, I have the Firewire/USB card because I'm quietly running a 333mHz Beige Tower - and yes that's an old machine. When I picked it up I already had MAC/PC serial equipment for MIDI and ADAT synchronization. USB replacements were only a promise when the rumors were swirling about the "new Mac specs". I was in the middle of an ADAT project so I ordered the G3 with the waning technology. When I want to take on the dual G4's acoustic signature AND I can run or replace specific VST instruments in OS X, the peripherals will migrate and the G3 will become an office machine.

Doubt that it hurts or affects performance. Bob Vandiver (Anybody can feel free to correct me if I am wrong about any of this)

The XSkey is one very valuable little piece. I wonder how sensitive it is to mechanical wear and tear. It is very convenient to keep the XSkey in the key-holder, but can it be damaged by this? What happens if it ceases to function? Is it easy to get it replaced? Bjorn

Message #131582
I wonder, if someone here knows about why this happens this way: I have two meters that monitor my CPU load. One of them shoots through the roof rather quickly while the other one is bored. Usually I wouldn't mind, but I'm getting ASIO overload errors with one processor hardly doing anything. Is this a known issue and if so, can I somehow work around it? I working on a DUAL G4 533Mhz, 900MB RAM, Logic Platinum 5.5.0 Maybe in acouple of weeks when I'm getting 6 this will all be over with... Thanks for the help Hans

Subject: [GEN] multitrack midi recording
Message #131583
Ok, I'm terrible with Midi. Here's my problem. I have 2 midi controllers (K2500 & DD55). I want the k2500 to trigger a Kontakt instrument and the dd55 to trigger a Battery instrument. I record enable both the Kontakt instrument and the Battery instrument. When I play the K2500 both instruments play. The same is true when I play the dd55 - both instruments play. How can I make the K2500 only trigger the Kontakt and the DD55 only trigger the Battery so I can record a live performance of both? Thanks Steve

Subject: [LAM] Motu Vs. RME?
Message #131589
Hi y'all, Since I upgraded to a Quicksilver mac DP 1 Ghz, I haven't settled on a new audio interface yet. My old card, the Lexicon Core 32 (one of the great technological white elephants of all time) will go to rest in my Gigastudio PC. My system also includes a Tascam DM24 mixer (with TDIF i/o), and a UAD1 card. I'm trying to pick between the RME 96/52 DSP and the Motu 2408 Mk3. Which do you suggest? Seems like the RME has the best PCI usage and lowest latency for VSTi's, but lack of TDIF and analog i/o means buying add-on modules, tying up more space on theback of the computer... The MOTU Mk.3 is a little pricier, but the i/o flexibility seems tailor made for my system. But what's the latency like with Logic, and what about this PCI bus- hog issue? Suggestions? Warnings? Cash donations? Lemme know, Thanks

I keep mine permanently plugged into one of the USB sockets on the back of my Apple display (the other one goes to the keyboard and mouse, and I occassionally plug my digital camera into the other USB socket on the keyboard). Sort-of like this ASCII-art: +----+ /============| () | | +---------+ | |####| | | | [<=XSKey |####[<====>] | | | +------------[<==Mouse | | | | | [<=>] Keyboard | |....| | +---------+ | +------------[<=Êmera +____+ =============/ All seems to work nicely, and the XSKey is tucked away out of sight. But, I would use each and every one IF, and only if, after each step, with lots of bypassing and A/Bing different settings, the sound got better. I'd also do versions with less plug-ins and compare. I've been thinking of a system, where, using aux send bypassing, I can bypass only certain plug-ins, so that only EQs remain, alter the order of plug-ins, etc. It would have a semi automatic level compensation by bypassing volume plug-ins. I got support for this chain from Joe Doherty, Factory Masters, New Orleans, on the Mastering Web Board, How Do You Do That? http://webbd.nls.net/webboard/wbpx.dll/~mastering/login Quote: "In general here in N'awlins I use an almost identical chain with very conservative settings and process twice using dither only on the second time through." Don't know yet what the differences are. 1. declicking 2. decrackling 3. denoising 4. de-essing 5. stereo image correction (if the image is not symmetrical/center stuff is not in the center) 6. single band compression/limiting of transient peaks 7. corrective EQ 8. single band compression, low level compression curve (not affecting peaks) or parallel compression (mixed with uncompressed signal, not affecting peaks) 9. bass enhancer 10. tape/tube saturation emulation or some other distorting device (preferably multiband), if reverb before multiband 11. reverb, if driving multiband soft 12. multiband compression 13. tape/tube saturation emulation or some other distorting device (preferably multiband), if reverb after multiband 14. reverb, if driving multiband hard 15. sweetening EQ 16. exciter 17. stereo enhancement 18. limiting 19. clipping 20. dither That's 18 processors.

You could use the input objects in the Logicmixer for realtime control. That way you have to have enough inputs for all your keyboards or route a submix into your soundcard inputs. Otherwise the only way to convert midi to audio is to record them just like when you record a vocal or something, out of the keyboard and into your soundcard, one sound at the time. Hi Neil, thans for the response, but I just found out again (silly me always forgets...) why that doesn't really work: If you change the level of let's say all the vocal tracks then the reverb buses that are used on those tracks do not change, which means the reverb is too loud which means I now have to turn that down too. So again I'm fiddling and scrolling. But as mentioned in one of the other posts: Logic 6 will have fader groups and finally mixing will become a lot faster. Allright. WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE AVAILABLE????? (Sorry, I can't wait for the save project feature either, I'm too excited!) Anyway, great weekend to everyone! Hans

Subject: [LAM] Logic 6 and a Dual Gig G4
Message #131599
Hi, I'm switching over from another Audio/Sequencing program to Logic when version 6 is released and I had a few questions about Logic. I have a Dual Gig G4 with 1.5 Gig of RAM and two 80 Gig internal HDs. I'm considering a new 1.4 Gig G4 but I've heard Logic (OS X) has much better processor performance than my other Audio/Sequencing program. Yes, faster is always better but I thought I'd ask some experienced Logic users about your setups (maybe my Dual Gig will "smoke" with Logic?) I'll be running Logic 6 with: - ESX24 mk II - ES2 - Spectrasonics Atmosphere, Stylus and Trilogy (when released for OS X) - Plug Sound UVIs (when released for OS X) - Reaktor, FM7, Absynth (when released for OS X) - Waves Platinum What kind of performance (tracks, Soft synths effects, ...) are you getting on your G4s MPs with Logic 5.5? Will Logic 6 have even better performance? How is the Akai / Giga conversion with the EXS 24 mk II? - Is it worth getting the Chicken System Translator to do the translations?
