Hi,
Check out maxim's excellent freeware VST plug-in packs. Among the brilliant
and useful effects and synts in there is a plugin called BeatBox which is a
drum replacement plug-in. That could maybe do the trick for you. It has
built in sounds but you can also record your own.
Check it out:

My system:
G3/350, 192Mb RAM, OS9.04, MOTU 2408, LAMP4.7.0, audio recorded on Glyph
external 9Gig SCSI drive run via Adaptec 2940 UW
Mac settings:
Disk Cache - 512Mb
System software takes about 29Mb RAM
MOTU PCI 324 console settings:
Buffer size - 256
For general use only 4-6 inputs activated
Logic Audio Hardware Preferences:
36 tracks, Universal Track Mode on, I/O streams = "Max", Playback
delay = 0
"Larger Disk Buffer", "Larger Process Buffer" and
"More Friendly Disk Read Handling" disabled (unchecked)
Also, I do a lot of trimming of audio regions on the arrange page so I don't
actually have a lot of contiguous tracks happening at once - i.e. the song
may use 36+ tracks but only about half may be actually playing at the exact
same time. I _have_ tested my system with contiguous tracks and I can
achieve 24 - 30 tracks comfortably with a few plugins. More tracks or more
plugins will send it over the edge. Also, I use external reverbs (Lexicon
and Eventide) - this makes a BIG difference as Virtual Reverbs are a major
strain on CPU resources especially on a G3.
If you need to do a lot of contiguous tracks (Live drums, guitar, bass etc)
get the fastest drive and (if external) fastest SCSI card you can afford.
Also get the best audio hardware you can - Digidesign or MOTU - no contest
(I have been hearing a lot of good things about the RME Hammerfall, but have
not had a chance to test it.)

Felix,
Ran out of time last night:
1/ Use 256 meg RAM.
2/ Use IBM Deskstar ATA 100 GXP 75 or GXP 60 hard drives, preferably GXP 60,
if it is available yet.
3/ Replace your system drive with one of these and have at least one
dedicated to your audio files ONLY (I haven't done this yet, but intend to
this week).
4/ Don't mount any audio drive on your CD buss; two drives will get you a
higher track count, but then you need to go UW SCSI, or PCI RAID, as
described below.
Contrary to what many believe, including the dealer who sold me my system,
you can't mount three drives in a G4.
Mounting a third drive on your CD buss will slow the whole system down.
Merely unplugging my third drive off the CD buss increased my performance
dramatically.
5/ Defrag them with Norton Utilities - even from brand new. I was not
able to get past twenty tracks before I used Nortons. After the defrag, I
was getting close to thirty. After disconnecting my third GXP off the CD
buss, I am now over thirty - using TC and Waves plug-ins sparingly. But I
haven't finished yet.
6/ Set up your system, including installing everything again, run Logic a
few times, and then use Speed Disk, which comes with Nortons, to organise
your partitions with the most used on the outside of the drive.
You should get thirty to forty tracks now.
7/ If you still have problems, consider a Sonnet Tempo hardware RAID PCI
card. Though there is controvery about how effect this is (xlr8yourmac.com),
I am going to give it a go.
8/ If you are still having problems, something is wrong. However, if you
are just pushing the boundaries on the plug-in/track count, consider the
Sonnet Duet, a 500 dual processor upgrade that just slots
into any G4 - US$ 950, or thereabouts.
The TC Powercore should make all our lives easier, but it will not be cheap.
Over US $1,000, I believe. But this will take a lot of your processing
load off your CPU, which is the biggest problem.
My journey continues.
I have a second system at my office/studio. It's a G4 500 DP with UW SCSI
and 2 x 10,000 rpm Cheetah hard drives.
My goal is to get my home G4 400 IDE to keep pace as much as possible.
It will never be as quick or as powerful, but I hope to narrow the gap
sufficiently so that I can swap files between them without having to dumb
the big ones down too much.
Let me know how you go and I will do likewise.
Simon

Hi All,
I came to the conclusion that my system is not fast enough to run logic. I
use a G4 400 with the standard internal Hard Drive with plenty of ram. I
often get the "disk too slow message" when playing back audio.
What do I
need. A faster internal HD? A faster SCSI external
Any suggestions?

Simon,
AFAIK the TC card will only process TC's own plug-ins, not any third party
ones.

So ive got my LAWP going and I'm using a AMT-8 with USB.
I've got a p3/700 with 256 RAM, and I'm experiencing quite a bit of latency
with MIDI, using Audio Instruments. Are there any settings I'm missing?
There's not a lot of latency using the same setup but with Reason software.
Please help, latency is killing me!

latency when playing audio instruments is caused by your soundcard or it's
drivers, not the AMT-8. The AMT-8 doesn't do anything when you play audio
instruments.
you don't mention which soundcard you are using, so we can't say what your

The latency is not MIDI but your audio card. Don't know why Reason doesn't
have much latency. However, latency is greatly reduced if you use a
soundcard with really low latency. You don't mention which audio card

Yes, well said. Like spelling and grammar, scales are tools we use

Hi Dennis,
I would recommend not to do this, because without the fast memory bus of the
recent PowerMacs (which is 7 times faster than with 7xxx machines) this
makes no sense. Theoretically you have much more cpu power, but there
bottlenecks everywhere in those old systems. Also the price is allmost as
high as a new 450MP, which you can get really cheap at this time since there
are still some on stock.
Maybe not what you wanted to hear, but I would take very much care with such
an upgrade.... Also you will have problems to run OS X some day when the
time has come to change - even if this migh be in a year or so.

Hello Mac-heads. I put Intech's HD Speedtools drivers on my Ultra 2 SCSI

The 4Control is cool...but don't buy one or you will be driven insane.
It features nice native support for both Reaktor and Dynamo; however, the
utility that converts the controllers is Windows only (nice of them to
mention that) and ships on floppy. For those of you running Reaktor on a
ENIAC, you can swap the floppy for punch card via snail mail for a small
charge.
A kind soul has written a similar utility for Mac; however, there are
certain unpleasant hoops to jump through. You need to use OMS, and you need
to intercept the MIDI signal before Logic does, which entails telling Logic
to receive MIDI via the IAC bus rather than with OMS drivers, etc. So, yes,
it does work, but consider the medical bills from pounding your head against
the wall before making the jump.
If someone has an elegant way to integrate the 4Control into the
Environment, please let me know!
We deliver music cues for a TV show as AIFF's on CD-ROM. The easiest
way we've found to create them is to do a stereo mix on an audio
track, then bounce as AIFF from a stereo output. (We can also apply
our mastering plug-ins here, so it really speeds up the process.)
So we select AIFF as the output format in the Bounce window, but when
the dialog screen appears, there's no AIFF listed as a file type. It
does indeed create an AIFF, but you can't see the files from this
window, since WAV is the only file format available for selection.
It's not that big a problem, really, except for occasionally
duplicating a filename. (The program prevents an overwrite by giving
a warning.) It's just an irritant. Am I missing something in the
manual that fixes this, or is it just one of Logic's little
peculiarities? I had hoped 4.7 would fix it.

So what to do with all those scales? Practise them! Mess about with them,
play with them, get to know them. On your instrument, in all twelve keys,
in as many different ways as you can think of. For instance, for C major,
you can do
CDEFGABC obviously, but what about
CE DF EG FA GB AC BD C
and back down again, or
CEGEC DFAFD EGBGE etc, or
CDEC FGAF BCDB EFGE ABCA etc etc etc
And that's just C major! You can carry on with stuff like this on any or
all of the scales mentioned so far, again, always doing this shit in all
twelve keys, and in your head, not writing it down.
Then, as other people have said, you forget all about it, but on the way
you've figured out a personal vocabulary of licks which will instinctively
fall under your fingers when you're feeling creative.
(Approx value of above; two metric groats.)

I'm using a gina 24/96 with the latest drivers.
I experience NO delay when using reason, but there

I have to reinstall LAW anyways because when I updated

I've removed Mercury from the LAW directory but that wont help.
