I own a pair of Mackie HR-824s. they are the best speakers for the money
IMO. I have had the opportunity to hear alot of different speakers and no
speaker came close to the clarity of the entire frequency spectrum for the
money then the Mackie. I do have to admit the krk v8's were nice too. The
only speakers I heard that were better then the mackies were the genelecs
but they were twice the price but not twice as good.

Go ahead an buy them. I've heard them in a friends studio, and they are
excellent.

Bob,
Be careful. A surprising number of the most useful USB/Firewire
devices will NOT work with a PCI firewire or USB card. Only with
native, motherboard based firewire support. Even something as simple
as a USB headset for ViaVoice will NOT work with an aftermarket PCI
card USB interface. Have no idea why.
Good luck,
Jim

I've seen the Mackie HR-824s used in top studios and the engineers had good
things to say about them. That was one of the reasons I bought them as well.

Hendrik Jan´s "boolean selection" presupposed,
a CUSTOMIZABLE TRANSFORM-MENU in every editor
and in the arrange-window should be the way to go:
--- In the transform-window you´d have a check-box for each
transform-set
to make it visible in the "custom transform-menu". If you then
select that
transform-set from the menu it will be performed _immediately_ with the
pre-set parameters and _without_ bringing up the transform-window.
--- To take this to the next level, you could define a series of
transform-sets (kind of "batch") that will be performed by just
selecting
that "batch" from the menu. And again for each set of that
"batch" you can
check, if it will be performed directly (and if it performs "select
only",
"select within existing selection", "operate only"
or"select and operate"
then), or if the transform-window allows to set some parameters (i.e. the
transform-window opens, as it is now in event-edit´s transform
sub-menu).
--- The transform-window should include "cut/copy/paste"-actions!
(despite
the "copy&apply" and "delete", which are there
already).
That way each user could add a lot of specific functions that he/she is
missing in Logic.
(Anyone who has ever worked with the "custom effects" feature of
Soundmaker, should know how powerful this kind of user-definable functions
is).
Alberto
I have to decide quickly.
Would you mac users rather have the dual processor 533mhz G4 or the
single processor 733? Forget for a moment about the "superdrive"
and
the price difference. I can always buy an aftermarket superdrive
with the price difference if I go with the DP 533.
I really need some advice here.
Thanks,
Jim

The problem is, latency is cumulative. Personally I haven't
noticed any latency on plugins, though I believe Emagic have
stated that there *is* some on a couple of plugins (Spectral
Gate, was it?).
And with audio in/out latency, if you are in the habit of sending out
to crusty ol' outboard gear (in my case, a really
awful-but-somehow-good Midiverb I, Korg SDD1200 delay, and
Korg MS20) and recording the results back in, the in/out latency
will stack up each time.
Or playing along with prerecorded stuff - you may be playing in
time, but if the record latency isn't compensated for, the
recording emphatically *won't* be where you played it.
Every bit of latency will reduce the tightness of your groove,
unless it is compensated for. Now, I'm no rhythmic perfectionist,
but there certainly have been occasions when I've listened to an
earlier version of a song and determined that somewhere along
the line it's all gone to hell, when all audio regions have been
SMPTE-locked...
Coming from a home studio 4- & 8-track background as I do,
where everything was analog and there was *no* latency to worry
about, this has been one of the more frustrating aspects of the
move to digital.
The thing that pisses me off most is the removal of the "record
delay" parameter in most of the audio drivers preferences, which
means you *can't* automatically compensate for record latency.
Grrrr.
John Pitcairn
Ali,
when using the Triton with a sequencer, you will have to choose wether you
want to use the GM or the "normal" sounds. You can select this in
GLOBAL
by switching the option either to "GM2" or "Korg" - in
your case, you will
have to select "GM2" and should get the general midi sounds you
are looking for

But if a homemade CO2 filter kit could work in place of a dongle in the
USB port of a PCI card, I bet Markus wouldn't tell us :)

Hey thanks for the info. I am sure that it recorded because I imported it
into logic and the wave graphic came up and I have already tried the
parameters but I will review again. I am very thankful for your info.

1.check if you really recorded something with the wave player in
windows
2.In the enviroment open the audio mixer, select an audioobject by
clicking on the letters down under the object. Then check in the
parameter box if you have selected the soundblster as device.
3. There should be somekind of mixer with the blaster, maybe its in a
program called audio hq or something like that and check the routing.
Maybe there is a through switch, that you even might here your music
but do not record.
Hope this helps

I hope from now on Emagic only announce revisions on the day they're
available - then it's like an unexpected present. And we get less bitching
on the list from mistakenly aggressive consumers smarting with righteous
indignation. (Who was it who said the customer is always right? 50% of the
time, the customer is an ignorant pain in the ass.)
There's a very funny ad in the U.K. at the moment for Grolsch lager, with a
mellow Dutch guy telling a load of bank robbers who arrive at a building
site (the bank hasn't been built yet) not to be impatient - they've got to
wait until it's ready.
4.7 is exactly the same. When it does arrive I'm sure it will be great, and
add lots of functionality for free. What is there to complain about? Until
then, make some music with 4.6.3 - if you can't then you're doing something
wrong.

No. for two reasons:
Firstly everyone knows Emagic is not a piece of bug-ridden crapware because
it is well known throughout the industry, and secondly, I believe everyone
would be more inclined to admire the honesty and feel more secure in the
knowledge that the issue has been logged and is being dealt with. Don't
forget we are not just talking bugs, we are also talking improvements.
Instead we all make suggestions, wondering if it falls on deaf ears and
don't find out until the next release and then wonder if your idea is
incorporated, was it because you reported it, or was it already known about
and logged and therefore not worth your effort in the first place?
There is of course the other side of the coin which is probably equally
debatable. Maybe it is non of our business as to their future plans,
certainly not in the marketing sense. After all, we don't all demand BMW
tell us about their plans for the next model so we can decide whether to buy
now or wait for the next one, or maybe wait three months because their SE
pack has more inclusions (damn them!). Sometimes there is a fine line
between asking for an answer to a reasonable question, and demanding to know
something that we either don't actually need to know (like when's 4.7
release due when we all know it is very soon) or have no business knowing.
My request for the Web site still stands however, a simple informative list
of acknowledged bugs or possible minor improvements, earmarked for the next
release, market permitting!
I'm off to bed, tired of all that yelling at the tele! About time England
did well!

This is one of those things I got out of the habit of doing a long time ago.
It always seemed to put unnecessary strain on the system and seemed to
invite a lock up. Not sure if it is really applicable anymore with ME and
4.5 but as I say I habitually do not do it any more. I always find it far
better to just stop, scroll to the new position and double click the top
locater bar to re-start.

I have a pair of HR824s and love them. I've been using them for almost
three years after switching from a pair of NS 10Ms. I think with
monitors the important thing is how well you know them rather than any
objective measurement as to their quality.
Having said this, I like the Mackie's because they not only sound really
good and make it fun to play your gear through; but I have
"learned"
them well enough that my mixes translate well to other systems. There
are a few dip switch settings for bass and room perspective that take
some experimenting with. But it is well worth the time. I find them to
be great bang for the buck.

Hello,
any help appreciated.
The specs - Logic Audio Platinum on a Mac G4 using the DIGI001 unit

We have full stereo playback of any audio objects in the

and listening to objects in the Audio Window. The right
channel is mute. Anyone have a similar experience or know

While the discussion over zoom and general tool behavior was happening I
was thinking ... how come I can't get my default command key modifier to
change?
If I hit command key (apple key) in LAM4.63 and always before that, the
tool switches from pointer to pencil.
I'd rather it switched from pointer to scissors.
No matter if I save the screen sets with it set the way I want it
pointer scissors
it always defaults back to pointer + command=pencil when I change

Am I forgetting something here?

Er, you're putting the cart before the horse. The "favour"
is not the act of being late, but the act of NOT releasing
a premature version of the software just to satisfy an
imaginary "release date" that was loosely predicted.
Believe me, you do NOT want 4.7 until it's ready.
And I wouldn't call it a favour! Just a sensible and logical
decision that will avoid tons of grief on the part of the
users.
As I mentioned before, I heard some Steinberg guys
say they NEVER want to again announce this imaginary
release date until it becomes obviously imminently
finished (usually, a few days before). I agree with this
tactic. Not only is it honest, but it only pisses off the
people who are happy with false predictions.
