Hello Everyone,
I have LAWP 3.61 and have been trying in vain for days to record
enable the tracks on my Alesis ADAT XT's. I have followed the
instructions contained in the LAWP 3.5 owner's manual (Chapter 16
pages 16-15,16-16,16-17) to the letter. I'm using the MOTU
MTPAV(non-USB) as my midi interface. I have been on the phone with
MOTU tech support and they had me do a "hard reset" which didn't
make any difference. They informed me that with a "hard reset" the
MTPAV couldn't possibly be filtering or re-channeling the MMC
commands that Logic is sending out. This shouldn't matter anyway
since isn't MMC sent out to all ports over all channels anyway? They
directed me to Emagic tech support stating that maybe LAWP 3.61
doesn't fully support MMC.
I then called Emagic USA tech support who proceeded to very
patiently walk me through the entire procedure that as stated in the
manual (page 16-16). After a lengthy phone call which included most
if not all the tech support gurus in California they came to the
conclusion that I'm doing everything right and that it should be
working. So this is where I stand. The following are every bit of
information I can think to share in regards to what the program is
doing.
1. My ADAT's are recognizing REC, PLAY, FF, REW, PAUSE, just NOT the
Record Enable of the individual ADAT Tracks.
2. Logic is also creating an empty "MMC Recorded" for whatever
tracks I click on in the Arrange window like it's supposed to, only
the ADAT's again never responded.
3. Logic is showing the following midi message on any MMC commend.
(X 1 127 127)
4. I've also experimented with changing the Device ID of the MTPAV
as well as the ADAT's to no avail.
5. The MMC tape tracks (icon #305) ARE the first 8 or 16 tracks in
the arrange window.
6. I've created only one (icon #305) instrument in the environment
and repeated it 8x in the arrange window and I've also tried eight
(icon #305) instruments used only 1x each. Both haven't worked.
7. Just to be sure I also contacted Alesis to make sure my ADAT's
fully supported all the MMC commands and they do.
So there is my problem. This group is my last hope. If anyone has
any experience using MMC functions in Logic I would love to hear
from you. Any thoughts, suggestions, things to try would be very
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for all responses!!!

It could not be possible for me to achieve what I do now by using the Audio
plugs of 3.6! I even had glitches when EQ-ing a kickdrum. The same song
worked flawlessly in 4.0.
No. I didn't have a DirectX phaser, flanger, tape delay with saturation,
platinumverb, compressor and autofilter already :-). Not to speak of the
highly creative free Maxim VST Plugs of Paul Kellett...

I suppose that you are using LAC that comes with the card. This is a
well known bug. Here is what you have to do to work around it:
In the Mixer window set one of the tracks to Input: digital.
Then record digital silence onto this track, the length of the song.
When you now try to bounce use the digital bounce button.
This will work.

Thanks everybody for the advice on Retrospect, I'll check it out!
Should I go for the Express version or the desktop version?

Have you booted the PCI-324 Console application, to check that your 1224
is on Internal sync ???
I presume that you are not synchronising to any other device. Also check
all of your sample rates.
Is this any help ??

hi everyone
i am using a yamaha vl70 sound module ( in voice mode)
along with a k2000(master) and korg x3. my interface is a unitor mk2
my environment consist of a very simple " scratch" environment as
describe in len sasso's tool kit ( starting from stratch pg 18)
the problem is the vl70. after selecting the instrument within a
short time it will " freeze" it appears to be a loopback or
similar
problem. i have tried seting the note filter to channel 1( pg 99 of
vl manual) but that does'nt seem to help. i also set the instrument
to "no thru' in the midi option page but then it does'nt seem to
recieve midi data . is the solution thru a fader or other tool
has anyone had this problem??
thanks in advanced.

I'm directing this question at anyone who runs logic with quicktime movies,
or anyone at emagic (Markus?) that can hopefully shed some light...
I have posted about this before but not sure if I made my initial question
clear enough...
I want to run logic with two monitors, in a sense, but NOT 2 VGA monitors -
one monitor which is the computer's display, and the other an RGB television
style display showing ONLY the quicktime movie that's imported into logic.
this would approximate the way I have been working using VHS tape machines
or umatic with timecode as a video source.
In a pro-tools studio that I use, there is a powermac running a TDM system.
pro-tools comes up, obviously, on the computer's monitor and a television
monitor plays back the video that pro-tools is locked to off HD via a miro
capture card.
my questions are :
can I tell logic to output it's quicktime movie to an rgb monitor, or does
quicktime somehow do it automatically??
can I do this with an inexpensive USB video capture box that has an rgb
output?..image quality is not that important since it is only a sync dub so
I'd rather avoid spending big bucks on an expensive PCI capture card. I
just want to be able to suck vision in from VHS, make it into a quicktime
movie, lock logic to it and output the video to my television monitor while
logic is running. this works easily, yeah???
any help/advice gets...er...some steak knives maybe? :-)

Thank you.
Here is a simple example to illustrate how dithering preserves low volume
signals. The details of the actual execution are a little different and the
values are a little overstated but the principle holds.
Imagine You have a low frequency square wave, say for example 22.5 cycles
sampled at 44.1k. You want to preserve it but lower its volume by 90
percent.
If you draw it on a graph the upper part of the wave hits a value of +4 the
lower part hits -4. Imagine that a value of 1 is equal to the least
significant bit. If you cut its volume by 90% the upper and lower values
become +0.4 and -0.4. Since the least significant bit is equal to the
value 1 and the values are less than half of the volume of the least
significant bit the sixty cycle square wave is completely eliminated from
the signal because the 0.4 -0.4 values will always be rounded to zero.
Remember this is a 22.5 cycle square wave so a single cycle will include
around 1000 individual positive and 1000 negative samples at 44.1k.
Now imagine that you add a completely random dithering noise comprised of
values varying between +3 and -3 to the original signal before you decrease
the volume.
Now the top part of the wave will fluctuate between a value of 1 and 7 and
it's average value will be 4 and the same will be true for the bottom part
of the wave it will fluctuate between -7 and -1 and have an average value
of -4.
*Now* when you decrease volume of the signal most of the samples with the
positive value will be rounded to zero but some of them, since there will
be some 0.6s and 0.7s in there, will be rounded to 1, (none of them will be
rounded to -1).
When you add up the zeros and ones for the 1000 or so consecutive samples
that corespond to the positive part of the wave and divide by 1000 you will
find the average value will be 0.4.
Conversely the exact same thing will happen to the negative part of the
wave you will have 1000 samples whose value fluctuates between -1 and zero
and their average value will be -0.4 and it will always be a negative value.
Thus you will have a noise signal with a low frequency 22.5 cycle component
and the volume of that 22.5 cycle component will be less than half the
volume of the least significant bit.
Thus you will have preserved a 22.5 cycle signal by dithering that
otherwise would have disapeared because it would have been under half the
threashold volume level represented by the least significant bit.
his is the principle by which dithering helps keep the tail ends of notes
from getting truncated at low bit depths.
It is also worth noting dithering noise does not need to be in the audible
spectrum and does not need to be audilbe itself in order to make the lower
frequency components of a signal audible. Thats why I have always thought
a 96k sampling rate would be pretty cool because you could do some pretty
hefty dithering well out of the audible range.

Mike,
I've had the same problems as you have, and I've gone through the steps you
mention to rectify it. sadly, however, I was not able to find another
solution than to disconnect the VL's midi out so that no midi looping can
occur. admittedly I haven't tried tweaking Logic to filter out incoming
midi, but I guess it should be doable.
good luck!

You may want to check out the www.rme-audio.com site. They have a good tech
info section and specs for their referrence PC. A lot of people on the list
swear by RME cards also. I'd use a separate machine, or a game console for
games as they can change the way Windows handles audio during their install.
That seems to be a standard recomendation.
Good luck

doh, replying to oneself feels kinda stupid ;-). anyway, I found a solution
that seems to work. that is, I assigned the output of Bus 1 to Lexicon's Aux
Send and then the MP-100 returns the signal by mixing it back with the D/A-1
and 2 outputs. it works, but I wonder if anyone has got another setup? using
the card as an VST-plugin seems to crash Logic, which is in line with
Lexicon's advice :-(.

Hey list,
I am trying to work with a friend of mine who is blind so that he can begin
to use Logic. He uses JAWS. If you are familiar with this I would like to
chat with you.
Now on to the main point. One of the things that we would like to be able
to to is print out (or to a file) the key commands list. Do any of you know
how I might do that?
Thanks for your help,

I don't know if it is 001 related, but sometime if you play audio and
midi tracks, audio stop playing, while the midi keeps playing and then
you loose mouse an KB.
Tuning off the compressors is fixing the problem.
Steffan has fixed the problem and it should be included in next
version.

keycommands-window - options - copy keycommands to clipboard
now you can paste it into any text-editor...
btw., that´s one of the most useful things you can do to get a grip on
logic´s features; highly recommended!!! (make two copies: one with
"hide
unused" checked, so you have an overview about your used kc´s,
and one
complete list; read thru it twice a day; make it your favourite mantra);
second tip: read the manual from top to bottom, twice a year 8-)

I´m running LAWP in conjunction with a miro dc 30+;
on windows it can just playback avi´s and no mov´s, don´t
know about mac...
don´t ask me how i configured it, because the miro-card was chosen
automatically to be my video playback-device with logic; works great!

Hello;
I am using the UA-30 with my powerbook 400, I ended up buying the ASIO
drivers from www.usb-audio.com/ after a long debate on this list, it seems
to work fine, the converters are clean and beyond crisp for recording MIDI
into a powerbook, the internal AV on the powerbook is fine, but I think the
roland sound much cleaner and transparent.
A BIG BENIFIT you get with the UA-30 "especialy if your looking for
portability" is that it acts as a mixer so you can always hear your
midi
through the output without invoking the monitoring option from logic which
puts stress on the audio engine, THIS IS GREAT for Playing software synth
with very low latency...., also there are REAL faders to control the input
and the output.
I highly recommend this combo for laptop users...

Make a Vl70- instrument in the environment, give it an Icon, then check the NO

The VL70-m has a soft thru which cannot be turned off. You will have
to route the VL's in port of the physical input to a "dead end",
so
that the data does not get to the "To Sequencer & Thru"
object.

AFAIK you'll then be having problems if you'd like to record breath or wind
controller data from the module into Logic, would you not? personally I'm
looking into adding such a controller to my master keyboard instead of
plugging it into the VL70-m, and then there hopefully shouldn't be any
problems.

If you bounce midi you have to connect the output of your soundcard to
the input.
Try read some info on Dave Bellinghams site.
Theres a link on the home of the LUG.
