This is indeed wishful thinking and maybe a bit much to ask. But the idea
is certainly fair given the situations that many of us registered users
find ourselves in everyday. I too use LAM on two mac models, (one usb and
one adb).
I think a good compromise would be to allow registered users the ability to
purchase a second dongle at a (greatly) reduced price. We've already bought
the software, we're just trying to use it in our modern studios, as
promised. The entire computer/studio picture has changed greatly over the
past 10 years. It's really time, some of the old time software companies
begin to change some of their ageing policies to something that more
closely reflects the modern needs of their users.

Hello again....
As a fellow vs studio owner, I would like to help if I can...and
the only help I can offer is
this suggestion....do you know whether your interface drivers are
current??......if your roland module isnt sending and receiving properly
it may be something in the module....had the same problem with the yamaha,
and went back to factory default, cracked the manual, started all over and
found the problem.....
I've used a few different sequencers and by far, Logic was the most
cooperative in terms of
linking all midi devices together....the Mtc works incredibly with the vs,
never a problem.....
I'm looking at the vs 1880 now.....however, through other forums I
have heard knocks against the supplied vs logic...happy with your 1680???

Instead of writing a new manual why doesn't emagic or someone else
(theirs a demand out there $$) make a CD-ROM, or better yet, Quicktime
tutorials available online for registered users only.
For a fee, registered users could log on and see at least two "task
-oriented" examples of every function in let's say the
Environment,Sample Editor ect...
I realize that it is impractical, expensive or whatever to write a manual
in several different languages.
Having said that, I think this is the best way to learn a deep program
such as Logic Audio.
Oftentimes the manual offers no more than a simple definition to some of
it's most advanced features.
If your English is shaky, you will at least be able to see and hear a
use of that function rather than just have a simple definition.

Yes, Logic does. Since version 4.1.1.
You should upgrade to 4.2.2 anyways as the support of some of them is better
in there.

No, you're probably right. But I was not argueing how they _should_
think --it was more of a guess as to how they probably _do_ think.
Unfortunately these are not the same :-).

I think the best choice is the Emagic, but I'd like to hear other opinions.

Thanks to all who chose to jump in on this topic. Here's a precis of
various opinions, as much for my own benefit as anything. It's
rambling, i'll warn you, so delete now, with my apologies, if
necessary.
First i want to share this, from E-magic in Germany, to Sonorus.
Sonorus wrote:

E-Magic wrote back:
>>>>>>>No, the latency is always the same, depending on
the I/O Buffer Size you
have
adjusted within the Audio Hardware & Drivers page (see screenshot). If
you
lower the I/O Buffer size, the latency will shrink. (Due to my experiences
StudI/O
can be set to 0.125 which results in a latency of about 1.2 ms)
Also, the Volume Smoothing parameter is affecting automation like volume
and pan: It's default is 50 ms, if you want faster response, lower this
parameter
the desired amount.
If the Option "Use larger Process Buffer" is enabled, Logic will
use the
double audio buffer
size for calculating real time fx - This also increases the latency by
factor 2 and if you want
to have fast response you must turn it off.
<<<<<<<<<<
The last 2 paragraphs are just rote suggestions. The first paragraph
is interesting, though. E-Magic seem to be equating latency with
automation response, which others here dispute. Also, 1.2 ms??? If
that's correct, then there should be no more problems. this doesn't
seem like the experience of either Thomas Whitmore:
>This is the famous 'automation latency' problem, which I have been
bringing

appear in
>Logic 5.

>However, the delays you experience do seem quite large. They should be

this down to between 20 and 50 ms.
Or Michael Barrett:
>>
Now this is a 'feature' I had not run into before, as most of my fades tend
to be slow, but this aroused my curiosity enough to test. Sure enough,
there's a delay. I can't fathom why I hadn't noticed this before.
As noted, changing the buffer size reduces the delay but doesn't eliminate
it. <<
As Ferenc notes, this isn't exactly latency. Its a slew , a slow fade
instead of a sharp cuttoff. Funny: It's the same problem (with
similar lag values) that i had with my VERY FIRST Session 8 setup,
running on a Quadra 650!!!. After a short while, the problem was
fixed; Digidesign shifted the track automation to a chip on the card;
after that, very sharp automation, as I recall. Interestingly,
Steffan Diedrichsen is denying that they do this, even with DAE:
>That's not true. The digidesign system is just using DSPs for signal
>processing, leaving enough CPU power
>just for the automation. There are no DSPs for automation.
This last sentence seems weird to me: When the Mix Chips load the "24
bit mixer" surely, that's exactly what they are : "DSPs for
automation"?
Ferenc again;
>>>>A Digidesign guy told me about the automation DSP. Then
why does AudioMedia II, on a MacIIcx (that I used to use),
have zero latency (throughput and automation) with LAM?
For you youngsters, that's a computer so slow it took about
4 seconds to change screensets. Imagine a G4 running at
0.5Mhz!<<<<<<<<
So here's a question: If the Session 8 did it (processed mix moves
on the card), and the Audiomedia 2 did it, and Mix Plus obviously
does it, will the Digi001 do it? Could be a quick solution, if it
does. a native system with no automation lag?
The guy who sold me the sonorus card is presently testing this with
other sequencers. I'll keep you all posted.
Thanks for all the input

I already have the English v4.0 manual so the translation is already
finished - it's much better than the v3 manual, but certainly not perfect
either. I've had it since early this year - no idea why it's taking so long
to get them now.

If you dither your mix to 16 and then do a 24 bit bounce, your mix
will be a 24 bit file with the last 8 bits all zeros. It won't be
truncated. In fact you could convert this resulting file to 16 bit
without dithering and it would sound fine, as you would be just
truncating 8 bits of zeros. If you want a 16 bit file, bounce at 16
bit, with the dither on. If you want a 24 bit file, turn the dither
off and bounce at 24 bits.

Michael,
The BETA NT driver is no longer available on the Emagic Website. And
I for one could not get it to work correctly when it was. I think it
had something to do with the fact that the BETA driver did not allow
for COM port selection. I tried running Unitor 8 control, but it
would not work.
Best!

So, I opened the Device Meneger and it scans for new drivers ...
I deleted ALL THEM !
I closed all windows and re-boot the machine .
Open Device Meneger for a new scan to re-connect Logic to my Layla .
It finds some drivers (not all of them but ...) ...
I open Logic Audio and try to open my almost finished song ...

I did it three time so far and nothing changes at all ...

I'm quite happy with the 1680. I've been on it for two years now and
I
think I've gotten the Roland tec support pretty much trained up.
But sereiously, it works fine and having everything in one box like
that is really nice. For real serious stuff the preamps need a
little
help from a high quaility external mixer but once you get past that
it
works fine. The mastering software that came out for it last spring
has helped me a lot. With it I can get my mixes as loud and flush as
any commercial CDs out there.
But I'm always looking for something better. I'm just getting into
this Logic stuff now. How do you like Logic?? Hows it compare to
the
VS format???
Sincerely,
Todd Greenwood

Try using the Logic Audio Device Setup window (LADS). This may get you what
you need for Logic to work.
HTH,
Fernando
I have setup the PC with Logic 4 Platinum, and is working like a
beauty. However I am looking for someone to help me with:
- My environment
- My MIDI setup (Motu Micro Express, but getting MKII)
- Mackie and Layla setup(not sure if I did it right).
- General MIDI questions.
Equipment list:
1 Mackie VLZ 1604
1 Synth
2 Sounds Modules
1 midi controller
1 drum machine
1 sampler
I have read all manuals, also The Environment Toolki, Easy Guid to
EMagic, etc etc. I want to make sure It's done properly.
Thanks

Hi,
Sorry to hear about this...
~ what sort of files are you trying to import? Must be AIFF, 8/16/24 bits,
Uncompressed.
~ What Mac have you got, system version etc, how much RAM, and how much RAM
allocated to Logic? Sounds like DR-005 is running out of memory - are you
trying to load a big sample in to a small space?
Regards,
Angus.

hi all,
can, an audio track, follow a tempo change ????? and how !,,o:))
Tx
Ok, I'm new to this list... so let me first introduce myself....
My name is Ryan Summers, I've been playing around with a few software
programs and a synth on my pc for a couple years now. I recently
bought a copy of Logic, and now have a lot of questions. I've used
Cubase VST in the past, so I've noticed some similarities.
My main question of the day is: When I open up the Rewire channels
in
logic (for rebirth 2.1), how do I record the different rewire
channels
to the audio tracks in logic? (or is that even possible?). I
usually
am just using the two 303's and then 5 of the different 909 sounds.
Ideally, I'd like to have logic run different efx on those sounds and
then record the rebirth sounds + effects to disk.
If anybody has any info, please let me know...
Thanks,
Ryan
Has anyone upgraded to LAP from Logic ISIS (which came with the card)
and then had problems (ie. GPF's galore) ?? If so, has anyone worked
out how to get it all going ????
PS. The system in question is a PIII 450 with 128mb RAM Intel Seattle
board 1 Quantum IDE HD (a good one - not one of the crappy ones I
always get warned about).
Cheers,
Jamie

There is a little app to enable hardware setup: The Logic Audio Device

Well, no need to record them as audio tracks I'd say... until your song is
finished anyways.
Just use FX to your liking, the tracks are directly streamed
("rewired")
into Logic's mixer.
If you want a final mixdown in your platform of choice's audiofile format,
just use the bounce function available from the master fader.
