My workaround is that I make a note what bar the bounce gets to when it stops, and bounce until just before that point. Then I bounce (the whole mix) from there to the end. Even if it wouldn't play when running from the top, I've found that often, starting just before that point enables it to play. If that fails, I just bounce in shorter and shorter sections until I get to the end, then edit the sections together (with lavish use of the most glorious key commands 'split objects at rounded song position' and 'tie objects'), then merge them.
