This is a reply to #86259.
Thoughts from the mind of Alexis Aiosa, 29-11-2001: > >What do you think "most wonderful undo system you can imagine" refers to? > >However, I guess, I need to clear things up a bit...this is not a personal >attack on you. >[...] >The PS files were huge, and there was already a lot >work to be done. Multiple undo's at that time, would have helped us a lot. Sure, I do believe you. I've only used PS since v3, and so can not judge what you're telling. However, the point is that I never denied that multiple undos are a useful feature. For some reason I hardly ever use the feature in Photoshop, but I do use it quite often in Illustrator. >People do seem a tad naive on this issue regarding graphic artist's >and their demands. I'm a freelance graphic artist, and I don't consider myself to be extremely demanding. The fact that others may be different in that respect is of no consequence to me personally. And the fact that a zillion people want a certain feature in a piece of software will have hardly any impact on my own personal wishlist for features. >One guy, great artist, but stubborn as a mule...painting solid >colors inside line art with a brush tool. When I told him, "there >is a quicker way to do that...if you want I can show you". He >looked at me coldly and stated "maybe some other time"...after that, >he never, ever spoke to me again. Freaks. :-)) >All I am saying is, if you ever worked in PS v1.0 to v2.5.1, back in those >days. I guarantee you would be wishing you had multiple undo's. Especially >on projects that were time sensitive. I still fail to see how that is relevant for the discussion at hand. First of all, for the zillionth time: I don't oppose the idea of multiple undo's. Not at all. There are just things I find more important or interesting. If I had to choose between a Photoshop with multi-undo but without layers, or one with layers but without multi-undo, I would choose the latter. Ditto with Logic: other things are more important to me. Just a matter of personal priorities. >Besides, how do you think Painter became so popular in the first >place...because it offered a nice way to create textures?...Beep! >NOT! Floating Selections and Multiple Undo's were very key in >Painter's popularity. There are similar reasons why people choose Logic over Cubase. Or why people choose Cubase over Logic. This isn't really an argument in favour of multiple undo's per se. If one piece of software takes the lead in a niche, then obviously it will become more popular than it's competitors. But in today's digital audio software, I don't think anyone really has taken the lead. If you really need full VST2 implementation, you choose Cubase. But there are tons of others reasons that might let you pick Logic as your favourite. The fact that many vocal users want multiple undo and the fact that Logic doesn't offer that while Cubase does, doesn't make the comparison with former Painter/Photoshop dilemma's valid or very enlightening imo. >I am not standing in total defense of Multiple Undo's. But it is >still a worthy cause and it is in fact, a time saving feature and it >does have its place on a feature request. Of course, I agree. However, for some it seems to be no.1 on their wishlist, and for me it's not. That's all there is to it. >the History Palette's inception was toooooo Late. We needed it >more, to be fair, right around v.2.0.1. In this case, 20/20 is hind >sight. But, it is still a good thing to have it now. It really >helps with work flow. And is not Counter productive, as you say >Henrick: it is the most wonderful tool to work with. Did I ever say the history palette is counter productive??? That would have been a bizarre thing to say... Thanks for your post which (to me) was quite interesting -- esp. the historical bit which I didn't know a whole lot about. cheers, HJ -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.ision.nl/users/h/index.html
