Quite good, actually. I do think the guitar(ish) sound front and center
fights a bit with the vocals. That "boxy" feeling might be the
lack of
ambience on that guitar part. I'm no engineer, though (and my mixes truly do
suck, but I'm a hobbyist relatively new to DAW recording). I used to do
8-track mixes on analog gear (ah the '80s!), and guitars or similar grinding
synth sounds would always get the off-center and/or bit of 'verb to keep 'em
from fighting the vocals. Vocal is a little dry as well, but maybe that's
what you're shooting for. I would take a listen to some newer Rob Zombie
fare for that heavy yet with nice ambience synth/guitar sound your song is
looking for, just as a reference point. Like the songs or hate 'em, that
"Hellbilly Deluxe" album has a SOUND to it - very well produced.
Lots of air
around things, even though it's got the cacophany going full tilt. Your
music strikes me as more punkish/garage than Zombie, but similar enough to
make the comparison.
Anything approaching what I call "electronic punk" (really any
short
electronic grinding song) is hard due to the lack of the unifying space of
the "garage" that gives it that tossed off balls out brash that
makes actual
garage music so listenable despite the grindage. Perhaps a short room-ish
reverb on the whole thing to give it space? Nothing too muddying, though,
and only if you seperate the guitar and vocal so they can coexist in the
mix.
Then again, my mixes (what few are worth a damn) are best redone by more
capable others, so take my suggestions with a few dozen grains of sodium
chloride...
