Don't forget the Metric Halo (MHlabs.com) Mobile I/O 2882+; I'm placing my bet (literally) that this unit is the real Firewire winner. It has 8 mic pre's with phantom power (4 xlr 4 trs), 8 analog outs, 8 channels ADAT, 2 SPDIF, and 2 AES/EBU. I ordered it with the DSP option which means that my unit will have two DSP chips for running Metric Halo's Channel Strip software and whatever else gets ported to this device. Unlike the MOTU 828, it isn't a firewire dead-end because it has two firewire ports for linking multiple units and other peripherals. The MH unit operates in 24bit 96 KHz and, best of all, can be run in a low power mode off of a Powerbook's battery via firewire! The company has been really responsive thus far and says that they'll be shipping next month. Unlike all the other units on the market, when I placed my order they asked me to provide the absolute specifics of my system (what software? What OS?...). Just to prove this isn't covert spam- I should mention that Crest Audio has a firewire unit that looks really nice too (I believe it's the FB-88). It's a great time to be a Powerbook owner, a year ago there was nothing on the horizon and now I'm faced with the choice of four multi-channel interfaces.
