Subject: Boycott Bomb Factory
Message #30851
The following message is being posted to all public forums I can think of. Please consider it available for immediate and wide distribution. Please do not reply to the message on the list if it is Off Topic for this forum. I apologize if you consier it spam, but it's the only way I can publicize the legal threats emanating from Bomb Factory. Thanks. I am calling for a boycott of all Bomb Factory products. There are two reasons. 1) They abuse their customers, going so far as naming one of them "Asshole Of The Month". 2) They have forced me to remove that Daw-Mac mailing list archives, destroying a valuable resource to anyone using digital audio on the Mac. Read on for more. The Daw-Mac archives have been removed. The reason is that the president of Bomb Factory has threatened me with legal action, because one of the posts in the archives contained a link to a site that offers cracked software. Nevermind that the crack site is easy to find, even now that I have removed the archives, and that I have a clear policy against piracy. The reason I didn't just remove the one post, is simple. I don't have time to monitor and censor the archives, and I feel I shouldn't have to. I think Bomb Factory is much better off going after the actual pirates, not after Daw-Mac. So why are they going after Daw-Mac? Well, it all started when the president of Bomb Factory subscribed to the list, and admitted that a customer who had a lot of problems with the copy protection used on Bomb Factory software, had been labelled "Asshole Of The Month". He said that he had said this to his support staff, in order to "cheer them up". Apparently this customer contacted Bomb Factory repeatedly, failing to understand why he was being treated like a thief when all he did was purchase software which then didn't work because of the copy protection used. Eventually a support person let it slip that he had been called "Asshole Of The Month". There ensued a long debate on Daw-Mac about the uselessness of copy protection. Anyone looking for cracked software can find it in a matter of minutes on the internet. All copy protection does, is to make it hard for legitimate users to use the product they have paid for. To illustrate this point, one member of Daw-Mac posted that a simple search revealed several sites where such cracked software could be found, including the software by Bomb Factory. Unfortunately, in his zeal, he also posted the URL's for this. On Daw-Mac, all the posts are archived, including this one. The president of Bomb Factory decided that he would threaten to sue Daw-Mac unless this post was removed. The fact is, I don't have time to censor the archives, so this is a death sentence for that service. I'm sure I could win if I bothered to go to court over it, but I obviously can't. It would take way too much time and energy. I think that the treatment of it's customers, and the way Bomb Factory has thrown it's weight around is enough for a complete boycott of their products.
