Leon, there was recently a big thread over on Daw Mac regarding how
Digidesign's core audio drivers a quite flawed by comparison to
almost any other makers drivers. Two major complaints seem to be poor
latency and reduced sound quality! There also seems to be an issue
with Mbox that core audio drivers reverse the phase of the outputs.
Maybe 003 as well (when running under core audio) The theory is that
Digi want to make their devices perform great with Pro Tools but not
with any other software. This has been my experience as well.
So based on this my initial recommendation if you don't need Pro
Tools would be anything but a Digi solution. RME, Apogee or Metric
Halo for example. If you do need Pro Tools then get a M-Audio
solution OR if you simply need the Pro Tools software without a lot
of I/O then get the new Mbox micro or whatever it's called and spend
your money on a decent chunk of IO.
So I guess the short answer is anything but Digi.
